SURCLA Presents | Violence, History and Redemption in La Hora Azul

10 September, 2013
5.30 - 7.00pm

Alonso Cueto

In this presentation, Alonso Cueto will refer to his own work and explore the relationship between literature, violence and redemption. Reflecting on the extraordinary resilience of the Peruvian people, Cueto will be focusing on one of the darkest chapters in Peru’s recent history that began with the terrorist war launched by Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path) in the 1980s. Following his presentation, Cueto will read passages from his novel in Spanish and will answer questions from the audience. Alonso Cueto is one of the most successful Peruvian writers of his generation. His literary work has also achieved international recognition; among the many awards and distinctions he received the Anna Seghers Prize for his oeuvre (Berlin 2000) and a grant from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation (2002).
