SPAN7001 Citizenship and Belonging in Latino/a USA

This new unit, available for MA students across disciplines, looks at the place of Latinos and Latinas in the United States, as an essential part of the national landscape.

Latino/as of many backgrounds are influential in both society and politics in the contemporary period. What does the U.S. look like from another angle? Remixed with hip hop, merengue, in Spanish and English, down the streets of New York, Los Angeles… and elsewhere.

The unit uses literary, performance and filmic texts, as well as social research, to expose students to the diversity and complexity of the U.S. Latino/a community within the context of the ‘greater’ USA.

Offered in Semester 2 by the Department of Spanish and Latin American Studies
