Thesis title: A Survey of Pastoral Poetry in Contemporary Australian and American Ecopoetics

Supervisors: Peter MINTER , Kate LILLEY

Thesis abstract:

This thesis assesses the intersection between the pastoral and contemporary ecopoetics. Through case studies of four poets - Randolph Stow, William Stafford, Brenda Hillman and Tracy Ryan - it demonstrates greater continuity between the pastoral and ecopoetics than has previously been assumed. Particularly, it focuses on how a reconceptualisation of the pastoral as social, communal, form can engage with ideas of ecopoetics which emphasise the social construction of nature.
