Biographical details

Robert Aldrich, Professor of European History, teaches and carries out research in modern European and colonial history, including the history of France since the Revolution, the history of the French and British overseas empires, the history of 'sites of memory' and the history of gender and sexuality.

Current projects

The Routledge History of Western Empires, edited by Robert Aldrich and Kirsten McKenzie, will be published in London in December 2013.

Aldrich is presently engaged in an Australian Research Council-funded study of the deposition and exile of indigenous rulers by British and French colonial authorities in the nineteenth and early twentieth century, with examples ranging from the last king of Ceylon to three emperors of Vietnam.

He has also signed a contact with Routledge for a book on Cultural Encounters and Homosexuality in Sri Lanka: Sex and Serendipity.

Awards and honours

He has held visiting fellowships at the Camargo Foundation in Cassis, France, at the Columbia University Institute for Scholars in Paris, and at Wolfson College and the Centre for Research in the Arts, Social Sciences and the Humanities at the University of Cambridge.

The French government has decorated Aldrich with the Ordre des Palmes Académiques in recognition of 'services to French culture'.

Other Professional Contributions

Professor Aldrich was Chair of the Department of History from 2006 through 2009.

He is a member of the advisory board of Outre-Mers (the French colonial history journal), The International History Review and French Cultural Studies.
