Dear Colleagues,
 
As we head to the long weekend and the scheduled university wide wellness week next week, I wanted to take the time to remind you all of the importance of taking a break and even a few days annual leave if possible during this period. In the faculty we have taken care to remove all non-essential meetings from calendars from Tuesday through to Friday next week to make it easier for all of us to take leave or engage in deep focused work. Read more

Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences announces new Deputy Dean

Professor Matt McGuire will join the senior leadership team
We are pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Matt McGuire as the Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. With nearly 20 years of experience as a literature studies scholar, Professor McGuire will bring his expertise and a fresh perspective to the senior leadership team. He will assume his new role in April 2024. Read more

The eternal return of the rentier? How our past weighs on our future

Today’s rentiers are no longer top-hatted financiers, and whether owning a second home represents moral turpitude or a middle-class survival strategy is actively debated in the op-ed pages of Australian newspapers. This lively and stimulating forum will discuss issues around the housing crisis, inequality, generational rifts, and political instability.

Oceanic narratives: Interweaving past, present and future

The ocean holds a vast space of meaning and connections. It has shaped and sustained life on earth for billions of years, nurturing the evolution of species, fostering a deep connection with Indigenous cultures, witnessing the devastation of colonial exploration, and suffering the consequences of extractivist expansion. James Bradley, Maria Byrne, Tishiko King and Helen Sullivan will  into the stories, beauty and mysteries of the deep sea and life through time.

Raising the Bar

The University of Sydney and the City of Sydney are teaming up again in 2024 to deliver Raising the Bar Sydney. Held for one night across 10 different inner city bars, audiences can experience 20 free talks from the University of Sydney’s innovative thinkers and the city’s entrepreneurs.

Updates and services

University-wide wellbeing break

The first University-wide wellbeing break will take place from 2-5 April. The University will remain open, and services will continue to be delivered, but we will collectively commit to reducing activity to enable focused work or annual leave. Staff News will not be sent during the break, but any important updates will be published on the intranet as normal.

Support for Students resources

New Support for Students resources are available to help Unit of Study Coordinators manage one-on-one academic consultations with 1000-level students at risk of not completing a unit of study before census, including video guides, drop-in sessions and an updated Student Appointment Guide.

We acknowledge the tradition of custodianship and law of the Country on which the University of Sydney campuses stand. We pay our respects to those who have cared and continue to care for Country.
