Project Volunteers | Department of English

Approximately 150 undergraduate and postgraduate students from within the Department of English have volunteered to participate in program events to date. These committed and enthusiastic volunteers inspire and support aspiration toward achievement in higher education, build partner student confidence by working with them (as mentors and as fellow participants) on academic learning modules, encourage a sense of belonging in the university environment by welcoming visiting students to campus and leading them on campus tours, and demystify the higher education experience by conducting Q&A sessions on university life. Partner students who visit campus clearly value the opportunity to engage with Department of English student volunteers, frequently citing “making connections with undergraduates” as one of the most valuable aspects of the program.

Volunteer Leadership Opportunities
Three leadership opportunities are currently available to interested undergraduate and postgraduate students within the Department of English who wish to volunteer for the program in 2015. These positions involve regular engagement with the program throughout the year, including attendance at monthly planning meetings. Along with the rewards already inherent in volunteering for this valuable program, these positions will offer the successful candidates the opportunity to develop their skills in publicity and web management, event coordination, or volunteer training and recruitment. Widening Participation in the Humanities | Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences

The project operates in league with the Faculty's 'Widening Participation in the Humanities' project, which is facilitated by Professor Michael McDonnell and also managed by the FASS Social Inclusion Coordinator, Dr Kieryn McKay. This broader project originated within the Department of History and has expanded to encompass the Departments of Gender and Cultural Studies and the Department of Sociology and Social Policy. In 2015 this project will further expand to include the School of Economics and the School of Languages and Culture.
