Mental Health Council of Australia

MHCA

The BMRI is a member of the Mental Health Council of Australia. The Council is the peak non-government body representing the mental health sector and has 58 members nationally, including health professional organisations, consumer and carer groups, community sector providers and health research organisations.

The most significant collaboration has been in the production of the seminal Not for Service report, the principal author of which was Prof Hickie, published in 2005 which demonstrated the crisis facing Australia’s mental health system. The link between the two organisations is further strengthened through the joint appointment of Sebastian Rosenberg as Deputy CEO at the MHCA and Senior Lecturer, Mental Health Policy at the BMRI.

The BMRI and the MHCA continue to work together on a range of projects aimed at reforming our mental health system.

Australian Institute of Policy and Science - Tall Poppy Campaign

The Australian Institute of Policy and Science is a national not for profit which promotes Australian scientific and intellectual excellence, encourages younger Australians to follow in the footsteps of our outstanding achievers and acts to build civil society and policy sector understanding of how science can contribute to public policy issues - such as in health. The Institute's Tall Poppy Campaign, including Young Tall Poppy Science Awards and the Howard Florey Medal for a milestone achievement in the biomedical sciences, recognises our brightest minds while also harnessing their capacity to engage the public - whether inspiring more young people to build their scientific literacy and pursue careers in medical, health and other sciences, or through encouraging public access to and understanding of research that is relevant to current policy issues. Inspire Foundation

Inspire

The Inspire Foundation is a national, non-profit organisation that was established in 1996 and aims to improve the mental health and wellbeing of young people aged 16-25 through three technology-based programs: Reach Out!, Act Now, and Beanbag. BMRI has partnered with The Inspire Foundation to create more opportunities to conduct research that focuses specifically on ICT, mental health literacy and help seeking in young people. National Acoustics Laboratories

National Acoustics Laboratories

The National Acoustic Laboratories (NAL) is the research division of Australian Hearing, a Statutory Authority under the Commonwealth Department of Human Services. Since 1947, NAL has undertaken scientific investigations into hearing, hearing habilitation and rehabilitation, and the effects of noise on people, including the prevention of hearing loss. One aspect of NAL’s research involves gaining an understanding of the processing of auditory systems within the brainstem and cortex through the use of electrophysiological measurements. NAL performs the vast majority of its work in the public good as a Community Service Obligation of Australian Hearing and the Department of Health and Family Services, using funding from the Australian Government. Additional funding is obtained from grants and from commercialization of some inventions. Some research is performed in collaboration with commercial organisations from the hearing rehabilitation and hearing protection industries.
