Reoccuring episodes of multiple sclerosis (MS) can cause scars in the central nervous system as a result of the breakdown of myelin, the insulating material that covers the nerve fibres. This can result in impairment of motor, sensory and cognitive functions, and an estimated 20,000 Australians live with MS.
In association with Multiple Sclerosis Australia and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, the MS Clinic at BMRI provides a tertiary referral, multidisciplinary service for patients with multiple sclerosis, comprising four neurologists with subspecialty expertise in MS, two MS nurses/continence advisors and regular on-site MS-specific physiotherapy and allied health support. The MS Clinic at BMRI has over 1000 direct patient contacts per year. Supervised training for the next generation of MS neurologists and nurses is an important role for the clinic, which is regularly attended by neurology advanced trainees, MS nurses in training and medical students from the University of Sydney.

In parallel with comprehensive clinical support, the MS Clinic also provides an opportunity for patients with MS to participate in an expanding array of investigator-driven and pharmaceutical industry-sponsored clinical research programs. A dedicated MS Clinical Trials Unit, established over 20 years ago by Professors James McLeod and John Pollard, is based in the BMRI immediately above the MS Clinic and facilitates patient access to cutting edge trials of new therapies for MS. The MS Clinical Trials Unit is currently recruiting patients with both relapsing and progressive forms of MS for inclusion in international Phase 3 trials of a range of novel treatments. Please contact Marinda Taha or Linda Pallot for further information.
