Molecular Imaging Symposium

Molecular Imaging Symposium, Tuesday 1 May, 2012

This one day symposium brings together some of the world's leading researchers in the field of molecular imaging. Topics covered include recent advances in multi-modality imaging, novel molecular probes and applications of molecular imaging in neuroscience, cardiology and cancer. The symposium offers an opportunity to learn about progress in the field of imaging science, and meet fellow researchers from a diverse range of disciplines and application fields.

The event will be hosted by the University of Sydney's Brain and Mind Research Institute (BMRI), which is home to the collaborative ANSTO/BMRI imaging platform and part of the Australian National Imaging Facility.

Keynote Speakers

Simon Cherry, Ph.D
Professor and Director
Centre for Molecular and Genomic Imaging
UC Davis, USA

Professor Cherry has made pioneering contributions to molecular imaging
for small animal models, including the invention of the microPET scanner,
the first MR-compatible PET scanner and, more recently, the discovery
of a novel imaging technique, Cerenkov luminescence imaging. He is an IEEE
Fellow and he received the Edward Hoffman Memorial Award from the
Society of Nuclear Medicine in 2005, the Academy of Molecular Imaging
Distinguished Basic Scientist Award in 2007 and the Imaging Achievement
Award from the Society for Molecular Imaging in 2011. His research
interests include developing new technologies and techniques for in vivo
molecular imaging, particularly positron emission tomography (PET), and
its application in studying animal models of human disease.

Jon Shah, Ph.D
Professor and Director
Institute of Neuroscience and Medicine
Forschungszentrum Jülich, Germany

Professor Shah has made important contributions to the development of
new pulse sequences in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). He developed
methods for quantitative MRI, including quantitative measurement of the
relaxation parameters T1, T2*, and quantitative water content maps. He
has also been at the forefront of promoting the application of quantitative
MRI in clinical settings. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics (UK) and
holds 18 patents on MRI-related technologies. Professor Shah’s primary
research interests are quantitative MR imaging, structural and functional
imaging, high-field MR, imaging of sodium and hybrid MR-PET. He has
developed methods for the quantitative detection of 23Na and 17O nuclei
using MRI and is collaborating with Siemens to develop the world’s first
hybrid 9.4T MR-PET scanner.

Harrison Barrett, Ph.D
Professor of Radiology, Optical Sciences and Applied Mathematics
Center for Gamma-ray Imaging
College of Optical Sciences and Department of Medical Imaging
University of Arizona, USA

Professor Barrett has contributed greatly to the understanding of the
physics, mathematics, and engineering of medical imaging and image
science over the last 40 years. He is renowned for his seminal text book,
Foundations of Image Science which he coauthored with Kyle Myers. In
2011 he was the recipient of the SPIE Gold Medal for his contributions
to imaging science and the IEEE Medal for Innovations in Healthcare
Technology. His research interests include image science, SPECT, PET
and CT imaging, molecular imaging, theoretical and psychophysical
investigations of image quality, applications of parallel computing in
imaging, astronomical imaging and adaptive optics, optical metrology
with maximum-likelihood methods, electron imaging, stem cells, digital
radiology and telemedicine in remote regions.
