About the degree

Master of Commerce degree at the University of Sydney Business School has been designed to allow you to either fast-track your current career or take it in a new direction entirely. The program was developed in close consultation with industry leaders, graduate recruiters, current students and alumni to provide you with a highly relevant and professional program of study.

The degree will offer:

Integrated learning in the key areas of business

The new capstone unit of study, Succeeding in Business, equips you with high-level cross-disciplinary and cross-functional insights, knowledge and skills. You will work collaboratively with peers and expert advisors to integrate specific knowledge acquired within your program to address real-world business challenges. The unit has been designed to consolidate your learning and teach you how to apply your knowledge and skills to create effective solutions in business. This combination of practice with theory will equip you to enter the workforce with confidence and experience.

Greater flexibility

Unlike specialist master's programs, the Master of Commerce is built on flexibility so it can be tailored to suit your needs. After completing your choice of foundation units, which are designed to give you a breadth of knowledge, the program will allow you to choose one or two areas of specialisation from 15 specialisations.

Real-world experience

Embedded in the program is a strong focus on extending your learning experience beyond the classroom. Through our extensive links with business, industry and government, you will have access to case studies, internships, on-the-job projects, workshops and other practical learning activities. High-performing students who achieve a WAM of 65%+ in at least 8 units of study (48 credit points) may be eligible to replace an elective with BUSS6500 Industry Placement, an assessable work integrated learning unit (6 credit points). Access to this unit will be subject to availability of suitable placements, with available placements offered on a competitive basis

Business Dissertation

Students who achieve a WAM of 80%+ in at least 8 units of study (48 credit points) are eligible to apply to complete a research dissertation equivalent to four units of study. The business dissertation is subject to availability of suitable supervisors and interview by the Program Director.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Recognition of prior learning and work experience can mean a reduction in the number of units required to complete a Master of Commerce degree. A student with a bachelor's degree in a business-related area or professional work experience, and meeting other standard admission requirements, will be eligible for a 25% (4 unit) reduction for the Master of Commerce, meaning that they will be able to complete the degree in 1.5 years of full time study.
