Some employers may be looking for a level of specialisation that is not provided in a three-year pass award course. If you are looking to improve your career prospects, honours could be your next step. You may also undertake the honours study to open the door to further academic study, or simply indulge a passion to carry out an in-depth research in a particular topic that you find fascinating.
Students are strongly urged to give consideration to the proposed thesis topic and potential supervisor before submitting an application. Staff members of Business Law have research expertise in a number of areas in which they may be interested in supervising. In addition, from time to time, staff members of Business Law may be interested in supervising particular topic areas. Students should not feel constrained by these areas and are invited to submit proposals on other topics for research in which they are interested.
There are no specific prerequisite honours units of study for Business Law, however, students must complete a major in Business Law to be eligible for Honours in Business Law.
Students wishing to apply for acceptance into the Final Honours Year program for Business Law commencing next year, must complete:
OR
by the last working day in November.
Students interested in undertaking the Honours program are required to have completed the requirements for their undergraduate degree and have completed a major in Business Law. Students are required to have a minimum overall WAM of 65 percent, calculated across all senior units of study. In addition, students must have a minimum WAM of 70 for their Business Law major. Students intending to submit an application should contact Barbara Mescher, Business Law Honours Coordinator.
The Business Law Honours Program consists of two components: the course work component and writing of a thesis. The course work component is in the form of a reading seminar series covering common key issues in commercial, corporations and taxation law. The seminar series is supported by an intensive training program in legal research and important skills in managing a large research project. This course work component will provide a good foundation for students to undertake independent research on their thesis.
Please note these subjects will change from 2013.
Write 20,000 word thesis on selected topic (supervised).
It is possible to complete either double honours or joint honours in Business Law, subject to special approval by the Discipline. Double honours involves completing all the honours requirements in Business Law and one other subject and thus normally takes an additional year. In joint honours the two subjects are more generally closely related and a special program of study is designed for fourth year. This will usually entail doing approximately half the final honours requirements for Business Law and half for some other subject.
Supervisors may supply students with a sample template for the marking of theses.
The final mark for the honours year is made up of two components: course work 50% and thesis 50%. The final grade of honours will be determined on the following University scale:
