Description This unit examines the design and use of management control systems (MCS) in contemporary organisations across the for-profit, not-for-profit and public sectors, and, as deployed within and across firms. As such, MCS will be studied not only within hierarchically structured manufacturing businesses but also in equally significant contexts characterised by flexible structures, complex tasks, a provision of service, competing stakeholder demands and inter-organisational relationships. The unit relies on a set of readings by eminent scholars to introduce students to a number of typologies of MCS and their implementation in organisations. Students will gain an understanding of, and, an ability to evaluate and design MCS for contemporary firms to manage resources, compete and collaborate in a global, competitive and changing environment.
