Description There has been increasing interest in railways in recent years as a transport solution for both passengers and freight, and rail\\\'s modal share has been rising in many key markets. Problems of inadequate capacity are now arising, as much as problems of financial self-sufficiency, and these problems require a good understanding of what solutions are available, and (perhaps more importantly in an University context) why. This unit therefore offers an in depth examination of concepts pertaining to railway management, economics and planning. Importantly, it moves on to explain how these are applied in practical situations, and gives participants an opportunity to demonstrate their understanding through a range of exercises.
