Description Having relevance to all areas of transport, urban planning, public administration and passenger logistics, this unit provides an understanding of the characteristics of public transport systems and creates a framework to analyse public transport performance. It considers topics relevant to an appreciation of public transport operations and the role of public transport in the overall transport \\\'offer\\\'. The key focus is to instil a broad understanding of the concepts, issues and impacts of public transport for intra- and inter-urban areas and for rural areas. Within the context of an analytical framework, this unit builds an appreciation of the importance, the drivers and the problems of achieving efficient operation of transport systems. Public transport management is heavily influenced by the regulatory and institutional framework and the financial environment in which public transport operates: these key issues are explored to explain why countries/states have different levels and types of public transport.
