| Description | This unit is designed to further an understanding about what work means to workers and those who manage them. Each week we will locate a series of concepts drawn from sociological texts and the popular media to the world of work, looking at issues such as the patterns of change and stability in the structure of work and how work is experienced. The unit also looks at the organisational and occupational foundations of working life, bureaucratic and flexible forms of work organisation as they relate to a range of occupational groups including professional work and work which is considered dangerous and deviant. Relationships between work and other institutions, such as the family and education are considered, as well as relations at different workplace levels. |
