Description

This course is no longer accepting new enrolments through the University of Sydney Business School. The following information is for students who commenced study in this degree prior to 2011. All new students commencing study from 2011 must enrol in the degree DH066 Bachelor of Economics and Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery through the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences

This seven-year (full-time) program provides students with the opportunity to study in areas that are of particular relevance to the management and conduct of business in addition to studying Medicine. Students must major in either Economics, Econometrics or Financial Economics as part of their Bachelor of Economics and are required to complete six units of study in preparation for a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. Additional areas available for study within the Economics degree include Accounting, Business Information Systems, Commercial Law, Finance, International Business, Industrial Relations and Human Resource Management, Management, Marketing and Operations Management and Decision Sciences.

Please Note. Students who commenced their degree prior to 2010 can complete their degree according to the resolutions in force at the time of their commencement of study. Students should refer to the handbook for the year they commenced their degree for details.

Degree requirements

To be awarded the Bachelor of Economics and Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, students must successfully complete units of study with a total value of 336 credit points, comprising:

  1. all requirements for the Bachelor of Economics degree (units of study with a total value of 144 credit points set out under Bachelor of Economics course rules
  2. all requirements for the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degrees (units of study with a total value of 192 credit points) as outlined in the Sydney Medical School handbook.

This combined degree program is sequenced so that successful students proceed first through the Bachelor of Economics degree and then onto the degrees of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery.

Bachelor of Economics degree requirements

To be awarded the Bachelor of Economics, students must successfully complete units of study with a total value of 144 credit points, comprising:

  • four core junior units of study (24 credit points).
  • a major in Economics, Econometrics (with 12 senior credit points in Economics units) or Financial Economics*
  • 18 credit points in compulsory Science junior units of study
  • three zero credit point compulsory medicine (SMTP) units of study
  • no more than 60 credit points in junior (1000-level) units of study
  • no more than 48 credit points in units of study from outside of the former Faculty of Economics and Business (now the Business School and the School of Economics) (this includes the 18 credit points from Science)

* Students may choose to follow 2011 resolutions and complete a Financial Economics major as their compulsory major.

Students who commenced prior to 2010 may complete their award under the pre-2010 award course resolutions.

Bachelor of Economics core units of study

Junior units of study (24 credit points)

  • ECON1001 Introductory Microeconomics

  • ECMT1010 Business and Economic Statistics A
  • ECMT1020 Business and Economic Statistics B

Compulsory Faculty of Science units of study

Students must complete three six credit point junior units of study from each of the following Science subject areas (18 credit points in total):

  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • Biology or Molecular Biology and Genetics

Compulsory Medicine (SMTP) units of study

As part of this program, students are required to complete one compulsory zero-credit point subjects that include written communication tasks. For details of these units of study (including third year elective options), please refer to the Sydney Medical School Handbook or website.

The required units are listed below:

  • SMTP3007 elective unit of study (for completion in Year 3). This unit is a field of interest unit of study approved by both the Sydney Medical School and the former Faculty of Economics and Business (now the Business School and School of Economics).

Bachelor of Economics majors and electives

A major is usually a three-year defined sequence of study (in some cases, a two-year sequence), generally comprising specified units of study in a particular subject area. Majors are included on student's testamurs.

Students must complete either a major (minimum of 36 senior credit points) in Economics, Econometrics or Financial Economics. If students choose to complete an Econometrics major also complete at least 12 credit points in senior Economics units (e.g. ECOS2001/2901 and ECOS2002/2902). Students may also choose to follow 2011 resolutions and complete a Financial Economics major. Students can may be able to complete an additional major from the former Faculty of Economics and Business (now the Business School and School of Economics).

* The Quantitative Business Analysis major will replace the Operations Management and Decision Sciences major in 2012. Electives can be selected from the former Faculty of Economics and Business (Business School and School of Economics) or any other faculty of the University of Sydney (subject to approval by the faculty of intended study and degree requirements). Senior units of study may only be counted towards one major. In most cases, a major in these subject areas requires the completion of at least six senior units of study (minimum 36 credit points). For other faculty unit requirements, students should refer to the relevant faculty handbook).

Please Note. Due to prerequisites and other limitations, not all combinations of majors are possible. A maximum of 48 credit points in units of study only from outside the former Faculty of Economics and Business (now Business School and School of Economics)(including the compulsory Science units) may be selected in the Bachelor of Economics.

Progression Requirements for the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery

Students must complete the Bachelor of Economics (including the required SMTP and Science units) in the minimum time and maintain, as a minimum, a credit average (65 percent) in this degree. This is the minimum level of academic performance required for admission to candidature for the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery.

At the time of the completion of the Bachelor of Economics component of this combined degree program, if a student fails to satisfy the minimum requirements for admission to the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degrees, they will be transferred to candidature for the single degree and graduate with the Bachelor of Economics only

Accreditation

Within the Bachelor of Economics component of the combined degree, students may choose to pursue a program of study that would allow them to seek accreditation with particular professional bodies. See the Bachelor of Economics for details of available professional accreditation requirements.

Honours

Students may choose to complete an additional honours year in their Bachelor of Economics. For the Bachelor of Economics, students must successfully complete an additional honours year of study.
