Changes to Courses
Master of Commerce (and embedded/combined programs)
The structure and specialisations for the Master of Commerce have been revised for students commencing and transferring in 2012 - the new program structure is outlined on the Master of Commerce webpage. From 2012, there will no longer be specialisation capstone units (further information on how this impacts on each specialisation is available below) and a Commerce program capstone unit, BUSS6000 Succeeding in Business will be introduced. Although it is recommended that all students consider completing the new Commerce capstone unit, this will not be compulsory for students who commenced the Commerce program prior to 2012.
Continuing Commerce students have the option to complete their specialisation/s or major/s as they appeared in the Handbook of the year they commenced their course (see Handbook archives). Specific program changes are listed below:
- ECON5001 Microeconomic Theory can be counted/undertaken as a foundational unit. ECON5000 Economics for Business will no longer be available but will still count towards required foundational units if students completed it in 2011.
- A new foundational unit, QBUS5001 Quantitative Methods for Business, will be offered.
- Accounting specialisation - the 2011 capstone, ACCT6120 Corporate Governance and Accountability will no longer be compulsory but will be available as an elective unit for the specialisation. Students who wish to undertake this unit in 2012 should note that ACCT6001 Intermediate Financial Reporting will become a prerequisite and CLAW5001 Legal Environment of Business will be assumed knowledge.
- Requirements for CPA Accreditation - in 2012, to cover the CPA curriculum area in Economics, Commerce students will be able to complete ECON5003 Economics for Accountants (rather than having to complete both ECON5001 Microeconomic Theory and ECON5002 Macroeconomic Theory). To cover the Quantitative Methods curriculum area, students will be able to complete EITHER ECMT5001 Principles of Econometrics OR the new foundational unit, QBUS5001 Quantitative Methods for Business. CLAW6002 Corporations Law will be renamed, 'Corporate Structures in Practice'. CLAW6026 Concepts of Australian Taxation will be renamed 'Taxation Law and Practice'.
- As completion of ACCT6120 Corporate Governance and Accountability is no longer compulsory for the Accounting specialisation, students who commenced the Master of Commerce in 2011 (and have not been granted any waivers for foundational units) will be able to cover up to 11 CPA core curriculum areas within their degree with coverage of up to 9 possible within a Commerce combined degree program. Students should check the CPA website for further information on core curriculum requirements.
- Banking specialisation - from 2012, the prerequisites, ECON5001 Microeconomic Theory and ECON5002 Macroeconomic Theory will be removed from BANK6002 Bank Management and BANK6003 Global Supervision of Bank Risks but FINC5001 Capital Markets and Corporate Finance will become a corequisite for these units. If students do not wish to complete ECON5002 Macroeconomic Theory and ACCT6003 Financial Statement Analysis (compulsory units in 2011), they have the option to complete the new unit, BANK6005 International Banking and one elective unit listed for the specialisation. Both ECON5002 Macroeconomic Theory and ACCT6003 Financial Statement Analysis are listed as elective options in 2012.
- Business Law specialisation - the 2011 capstone, CLAW6002 Corporations Law will be renamed, 'Corporate Structures in Practice'. This unit will remain compulsory for the specialisation. From 2012, FINC5001 Capital Markets and Corporate Finance will no longer be a prerequisite for FINC6016 Financial Instruments and Markets and will move from a pre to a corequisite for FINC6010 Derivative Securities.
- Integrated Business Solutions specialisation - from 2012, this specialisation will be named Business Information Systems. The 2011 capstone, INFS6020 BIS Innovation, Transformation & Change will no longer be compulsory but will continue to be required for ACS accreditation.
