First Place - INFS5000 Information and Systems in Organisations, S2 2012

I think the BIS course has equipped me with new skills for exploring the issues around information technology and knowledge management. Our lecturer encouraged us to think about the social, political, philosophical and ethical issues surrounding technology.

The highlight of my BIS studies was to work in a group of students to analyse and interpret a case study of ERP implementation in China. I thoroughly enjoyed working with students from a variety of cultural backgrounds and social perspectives. When combined as a team, our different approaches to solving problems resulted in a great report and class presentation.

I would highly recommend other students to undertake BIS courses. I found the teaching in the BIS discipline to be excellent, and the information we explored to be essential for anyone wishing to embark in a business career in today's information-driven economy.

My motivation for studying BIS came from a desire to learn how the rapidly expanding field of Information Systems could make use of current and future Information Technologies to assist with, and eventually shape business strategies.

I would certainly recommend other students undertake BIS subjects/courses for the concise, logical framework that BIS provides in reporting and communicating ideas in a professional, convincing manner. In addition, students are exposed to genuine leaders in the industry - from IBM to CBA - ensuring that all courses are focused upon creating visionary BIS leaders that are ready to jump into the professional world.

I would recommend others to study BIS. I found the topics were interesting and enjoyable to learn. It also nurtured problem solving and critical thinking skills that are relevant to any role or industry.

The highlight of my studies has been having access to guest lecturers who are working in the industry. These lecturers provide insights on the relevance of what we learnt as well as provide information on new innovations in the industry that are not in the textbooks.

I decided to study BIS - in particular, Project Management - because I saw it as being a relevant and significant part of my career in the future, especially since I aim to work in the field of consultancy, where managing projects are essential. I knew taking Project Management would be beneficial and a great fit for my future career.

After working in the analytical area, I realized the strong demand for BIS in the business world. Most of the analytical jobs require a sound BIS knowledge background. As a student, studying BIS allows me to effectively pick up the strengths of IT and Business.

Having undertaken a Bachelor of Business with majors in Finance and International Business, I was interested in exploring a new side of business in my postgraduate studies. I was particularly attracted to INFS5001 Project Management in order to gain an understanding of how projects are managed across organisational units from initiation through to completion. BIS was also appealing as I perceived it to be relevant across all areas of an organisation.

The relevance of BIS courses to the overall organisation highlights their usefulness to my future career. Studying BIS courses such as INFS5001 provides a fundamental knowledge of business frameworks that are useful across business units.

I would highly recommend students undertake subjects in BIS, particularly if they find themselves in situations like myself where they are keen to diversify their studies and explore new areas of interest.
