Simons Green Energy

The Simons group are leaders in clean and efficient water heating and cooling, steam and distributed energy equipment in Australia. The company' s core business activity is the delivery of sustainable energy efficient technologies.

IBUS3103 undergrad (Global Enrepreneurship and Enterprise) GoodTonight GoodTonight provides an app that allows users to find the best bar for their night out, while on the go. The platform allows for easy discovery of hidden gems and the 'trending' and voting feature allows users to see up to date information on what is happening locally and at favourite hangouts. The founder of GoodTonight was a student in this unit of study, and offered his venture as a project for students , developing staged strategies and defining target markets.

Tjutjunaku Worka Tjuta Inc., Ceduna Youth Hub (RARE Project)

Tjutjunaku Worka Tjuta, which translates as "a place of work", is the peak Aboriginal organisation in Ceduna. It aims to improve the wellbeing of Indigenous people in the Wangka Pulka North ward of Ceduna. Students supported the initiation of a Youth Hub for TWT, exploring funding options, marketing, partnerships and governance issues.

Barkly Shire Council, Tennant Creek Coffin Manufacturing (RARE Project)

The Barkly Shire covers an area 323,514km2, the second largest local government area in the world, and has a resident population of 8,137(ABS NT at a Glance 2011). Students worked with the indigenous Ali Curung community and the Council to develop a business plan for an indigenous run enterprise supplying and decorating coffins for affordable prices.

Batemans Bay Local Aboriginal Land Council, Firewood and Logging Enterprise (RARE Project)

Students worked collaboratively with the Batemans Bay Local Aboriginal Land Council to develop business plans for an indigenous owned social enterprise in logging and firewood supply in the region.

Murdi Paaki Regional Enterprise Corporation, Walgett Laundromat (RARE Project)

Murdi Paaki Regional Enterprise Corporation (MPREC) is the peak provider of services to Indigenous communities in Western NSW. The Corporation's goal is to continually improve the social fabric and living standards of Western NSW residents. Students developed a set of strategic plans for the integration and operation of a laundromat in a community centre in Walgett. The challenge was creating a economically sustainble business that provided training for indigenous people and met a social need.

Bana Yarralji Bulka (RARE Project)

Bana Yarralji Bulka is an indigenous owned and managed social enterprise near Cooktown in Queensland. The Founders, Marylin and Peter Wallace, operate an on-country hosting service offering guided walks, camping and educational programs on their land with the vision to create employment opportunities for their people and preserve traditional knowledge. Students developed a staged business plan, to support the business achieve its social mission, build capacity amongst its board and the community, and become financially sustainble.

Week of Tastes

The "Week of Tastes" is a program that culminates in an annual event delivered in collaboration with schools, designed to change children's relationship with food and address eating habits contributing to the obesity epidemic.Students worked closely with the founder, Helen, to develop a business plan that would transgress her activities into a sustainable social enterprise that was nation wide.

Psychiatric Rehabilitation Australia (PRA)

PRA'is a non Government social enterprise which provides community based support services to people with Psychosocial disadvantage or psychiatric disability. They provide non clinical rehabilitation aimed at reducing people's dependence and increasing self esteem and satisfaction. Students prepared an Information Memorandum for a social enterprise franchise that would provide flexible employment opportunities for PRA's beneficiaries.

The Green Project (RARE Project)

The Green is a whole-of-community project located at the current site of the Tuncurry land-fill. This area is currently being transitioned to a transfer station and together we are creating a vibrant new community recreation venue. The project is built on the premise of sustainability and environmentally friendly practices, and brings together community members, working together, and learning together. One of our students completed in-depth research into the commercial viabibility of compost production from green-waste, and the marketing requirements.

Resource Recovery, e-waste recycling (RARE Project)

Resource Recovery is a not-for-profit community waste reduction and recycling organisation based on the Mid North Coast of NSW. Resource Recovery operates council landfills in the Great Lakes area at Tea Gardens, Bulahdelah and the Waste Management Centre at Tuncurry. An Innovation and Enterprise student analysed the opportunities for e-waste recycling, reviewing best practice in Germany and talking to industry experts nationally.

Paupiyala Tjarutja Aboriginal Corporation (PTAC), Rabbit Meat Harvesting (RARE Project)

The administrative and services body of the community, PTAC, is located at Tjuntjunjara. It takes responsibility for the maintenance of the community facilities and roads and for the operation of the office, store and other services. A student worked consultatively with PTAC and the Tjuntjuntjara community to develop an approach to starting and managing a micro-enterprise in rabbit meat harvesting, utilising the community's tradition knowledge and interest in hunting and the natural environment.

IBUS6015 (Innovation and Enterprise Special Project) Broken Hill City Council, Power Station (RARE Project) During Winter School in July, a cross-disciplinary group of students from the Business School and Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning spent two weeks in Broken Hill designing business plans, and architectural master plans for the reinvigoration of the old power station site. The 22 students formed 4 cross-disciplinary groups each addressing a particular opportunity for the site including; a Film Studio, Minerals and Mining Museum, Arts and Heritage Studio, and a Film Museum. They were required to incorporate four key considerations into their plans; sustainability, indigenous culture, education, and the arts. Broken Hill City Council were engaged extensively throughout the projects, and the final reports were presented to a panel of judges including council representatives.
IBUS6015 (Innovation and Enterprise Special Project) Tourism Hub, Aboriginal Bush Traders (RARE Project) The Tourism Hub Aboriginal Bush Traders is a not-for-profit initiative of Darwin Regional Indigenous Advancement & CDEP Inc. It provides a retail outlet in the heart of Darwin for indigenous produced arts, crafts, bush products and other items to support indigenous economic sustainability. A RARE student worked with the manager and other local stakeholders to map future opportunities and ways of improving its efficiency and productivity for long term economic sustainability.
IBUS6017 (Creative Industries and Enterprise) Itchee Feet Itchee Feet is a small publishing company that specialises in travel books and resources (both hardcopy and digital) for families. They are targeting a part of the market comprising parents with young and teenage children who need information about the places they are about to visit and activities for those children while travelling to those places. Students completed a business plan for Itchee feet during semester 2 2012.
IBUS6017 (Creative Industries and Enterprise) TV Tour Guide TV Tour Guide offers a free to use iPad App that guides audiences through all that is on TV, included what is scheduled on FTA, pay and what is available On Demand. It is positioned as the answer to the often overwhelming and confusing experience of content delivery, and incorporates peer recommendations. Students worked with the founder to identify new opportunities and progress the companies development.
IBUS6017 (Creative Industries and Enterprise) Two eight two eight (RARE Project) Two eight two eight is a non profit, community-owned multi-purpose facility in Gulargambone. This diverse facility houses a tourist information centre, café and art gallery, attracting regional tourists and encouraging community inclusion and participation. Students undertook extensive stakeholder engagement to identify opportunities for greater revenue and community participation across demographics, cultures and generations.
IBUS6017 (Creative Industries and Enterprise) Gary Lang NT Dance Company (RARE Project) The Gary Lang NT Dance Company was founded by a professional indigenous dancer, Gary Lang, with a vision to share stories and experiences through dance. The company uses dance as a healing activity, and focuses on community engagement and the benefits of self-expression. Students visited Gary in Darwin and collaboratively built a business plan that balanced the need for economic independence, and its social vision.
BUSS6509 (Business Projects) Aboriginal Bush Traders (RARE Project) Aboriginal Bush Traders is a not-for-profit initiative of Darwin Regional Indigenous Advancement & CDEP Inc. It provides a retail outlet in the heart of Darwin for indigenous produced paintings, books, bush foods, body products and other items. The access to markets, promotion, fair pricing and transaction support all contribute to indigenous economic development. A RARE student worked with the manager and other local stakeholders to map future opportunities and ways of improving its efficiency and productivity for long term economic sustainability.

Student research focused on developing a marketing strategy that was centred around partnerships and networks for remote tourism.
