The Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies (ITLS) hosted the Shanghai Transport Infrastructure Development Study Group, a delegation of senior transport professionals from Shanghai Transport Commission working in road, railway, port and airport logistics planning and management, research and construction. The visit, on Tuesday 10th October, was the first stop on the tour by this first study group to visit Australia; ITLS was selected for its reputation for academic achievement and its international transport system management expertise. Shanghai has experienced the fastest transport (including road, railway, port and airport) infrastructure development in last two decades. However, as one of the biggest international metropolitan cities, Shanghai's transport economics, smart transport system management, transport policies and strategy need to catch up in order for it to become a leading city in sustainable transportation management in China.

Presentations were made to the group on the following areas of interest:

  •
  • MaaS – Mobility as a Service – Professor David Hensher
  • International aviation, air freight and tourism – Professor Rico Merkert
  • Ports and intermodal terminals – Professor Michael Bell
  • Air connectivity and transport hub development – Associate Professor Xiaowen Fu
