Bio

Dr Behnam Fahimnia is an Associate Professor and Director of Logistics and Supply Chain Management Programs at the Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies (ITLS), within the University of Sydney Business School. Since receiving his PhD in Supply Chain Management in 2011, he has held positions of Lecturer and Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of South Australia, and a Senior Lecturer position at the University of Technology Sydney Business School prior to joining the University of Sydney in 2014.

Behnam has made contributions to multiple research areas in the context of logistics and supply chain management with demonstrated practical applications across a wide breadth of industries. His primary areas of research focus are:

  1. Supply chain risk management: identifying supply chain risks facing various industries and developing risk mitigation strategies and tactics;
  2. Green supply chain management: developing strategic design and tactical planning models for balancing economic and environmental sustainability of supply chains;
  3. Supply chain performance management: identifying supply chain performance metrics and developing decision-support tools and optimisation models for the effective and efficient design and management of supply chains.

An expert in applied and problem-driven research, Behnam has used analytical tools and innovative mathematical optimisation approaches to help managers create efficient, resilient and sustainable supply chains. He is frequently consulted by Australian regulatory bodies as well as a range of businesses, from small and medium size Australian companies to Fortune 500 corporations. To date, Behnam has led over 50 projects in production, logistics, retail, energy, mining, and food and beverage industries. With this experience, he has forged a strong and enduring program of industry-linked research, more recently rewarded by substantial funding from the Australian Research Council (ARC) to facilitate the establishment of a Centre for Food and Beverage Supply Chain Optimisation. Behnam as a chief investigator will collaborate with colleagues in Newcastle University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), and NSW Department of Primary Industries to address supply chain challenges facing some of the key players in the food and beverage industry, including Coca-Cola, SunRice, Sanitarium, and Batlow Fruit.

Featured in leading academic journals, such as Transportation Research (Parts D and E), International Journal of Production Economics, International Journal of Logistics, International Journal of Production Research, Annals of Operations Research, Journal of Cleaner Production, and Supply Chain Management: An International Journal, his work has been honored with numerous research excellence awards and scholarships by universities, research organisations and government agencies, including a number of best paper awards, the prestigious $105,000 William Southcott Scholarship and a Flagship Scholarship from CSIRO. A regular speaker at academic and professional conferences and industry events, Behnam has served as managing guest editor for special issues of top-tier journals, including International Journal of Production Economics and Annals of Operations Research.

Behnam has been recognised and continuously awarded for his passion and innovation in lecturing and teaching every year since inception. He has developed new initiatives for the education and training of logistics and supply chain students and managers, many of whom are current executives and supply chain professionals in leading organisations. He is a firm believer in critical thinking and holds high expectations for his postgraduate students who learn not only about facts and formulas, but also how to critically analyse different dimensions of real supply chain management problems.

ARC Training Centre for Food and Beverage Supply Chain Optimisation

With 15 per cent of the Australian workforce involved in food production and annual food exports of $30.5 billion, the food industry is clearly vital to the Australian economy. The National Food Plan White Paper states as a goal for 2025: "The value of Australia's agriculture and food-related exports will have increased by 45 per cent (in real terms), contributing to an increase in our gross domestic product." To make these aspirations a reality, safe, sustainable, and cost-effective, food supply chains will be essential. The Training Centre will train the next generation of multi-disciplinary researchers capable of designing and managing these supply chains.
