Waiyan first became interested in transport economics during discussions with his wife, who was working in the public transport sector in Singapore. After several intellectually stimulating discussions with professionals, he applied for a 2 year stint in the Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Singapore as Senior Economist. Over there, he became acquainted with the emerging field of behavioural economics and also with discrete choice models through David Hensher, who was a member of the International Advisory Panel to the Minister of Transport. Barely less than 1 year into his job at the LTA, he became sufficiently convinced of his calling to pursue a PhD at ITLS, so as to equip himself to play a more active and fulfilling role in understanding and utilising discrete choice analysis to improve the provision of transport in urban cities.
