Lunch-N-Learn Events

The University of Sydney Business School warmly invites all Business School staff with teaching responsibilities to our Lunch-N-Learn events.
These luncheons are informal events based on the idea of a 'learning circle' where educators meet to discuss what's happening in their classrooms and share challenges or practical tips associated with an effective learning and teaching experience.

Who can attend? Business School staff with teaching responsibilities, including anyone interested in enhancing knowledge about teaching, are welcome.

What happens in these lunch events? The focus of the discussion is driven by participants' interests and needs. We discuss ideas used in various disciplines to identify possible solutions to challenges raised by participants. Each luncheon has a facilitator that guides the discussion (usually the Tutor Development Program manager).

Catering: A luscious lunch is always catered. Numbers are capped at 15 to enhance the small-group atmosphere.

Cost: Free, but registration is essential.

Casual teaching staff are paid if they attend: All staff are encouraged to join us from 12.00 - 2.00pm and casual staff are paid for their attendance during the discussion period from 12.30 - 2.00pm.

Please note: The Lunch-N-Learn events do not count towards the compulsory TDP attendance.

What do you need to do to prepare? Happily, very little. Simply think beforehand about any activities or strategies you are using in your tutorials or your teaching that are working effectively that you might like to share with your colleagues for their consideration/adaptation for their contexts. Second, also reflect if there are any challenges that you would like to raise in order to hear how others would approach solving such issues.

What are the benefits? In addition to networking with colleagues from across disciplines, the less formal nature of the discussion (compared to formal TDP workshops), means a greater variety of issues are discussed. Multiple perspectives about possible solutions arise from the interdisciplinary discussion. Casual staff, who can sometimes feel isolated, report that these luncheons help to create a greater sense of belonging to the Business School teaching community.

Lunch-N-Learn feedback:

  • Thank you very much for a really informative and constructive discussion today. I really gained a lot of value from it. Thank you also for sending all [the follow-up] material which will be invaluable for enabling me to develop my courses further (Full time staff member).
  • Thanks for organising the Lunch-N-Learns and sending us [the follow-up resources you mentioned] ??? I found the session very useful and enjoy listening to the challenges and approaches of other tutors (Casual staff member).
  • I guess nothing improves professional practice more than doing and collaborating.  I might have several degrees, and a recent Master of Teaching (Hons) from USyd, but the learning from the TDP and the Lunch-N-Learns are already proving invaluable to my development as a professional educator (Full time staff member).
  • Thanks [for the Lunch-N-Learn sessions]. I think it's amazing that we have a stimulating discussion with colleagues along with a lovely lunch ... !!! (Casual staff member).

All feedback was from unsolicited emails.
