Calling all Emerging Leaders
07 May 2012
AFR BOSS Magazine, in partnership with the University of Sydney Business School, will hold its next Emerging Leaders Program event on May 17 in Sydney.
The event, designed to provide an inclusive atmosphere for young executives to meet, learn and network in an informal environment, will centre around the topic "Managing Up on the way up".
The forum will feature guest speaker Mike Wilkins (pictured), CEO of Insurance Australia Group, who will provide insight into how young business people can get to the top in increasingly political workplaces, and how they can maximise every opportunity.
Wilkins' presentation will be followed by a question and answer session, and a chance to network with your peers and meet senior executives who have expressed an interest in mentoring young executives through the early stages of their careers.
"When I talk to executives on the way up the career ladder, there are a couple of things that come up as issues," AFR BOSS Editor Narelle Hooper said. "One of the biggest problems they grapple with is organisational politics and influence. It is an opaque area and the earlier you can figure out effective ways of exerting influence, the better."
"The second issue is the importance of tapping in to a broad network beyond your profession or sector," she continued. "Developing and deepening those broad networks of influence become important the further you go. That means networks that cover government, media, the arts and the social sector."
"The Emerging Leaders Program draws together executives from across sectors which will help set you up for the long term," Narelle said, "and we bring people together at events which feature chief executives who are generous in providing practical perspectives anchored in the real world."
Membership to the Emerging Leaders Program is open to all young executives from corporate Australia who meet a broad selection criteria.
Members also receive access to special, one-off master classes, conducted in partnership with the Business School. The next master class will be held on Thursday 21 June at 6pm, and will focus on social media and how to manage your E-Image.
