"Communication is crucial" Sue Cato tells Emerging Leaders

21 Jun 2013

The University of Sydney Business School and AFR BOSS Magazine presented the latest Emerging Leaders event in Sydney on Thursday, 20 June, featuring Sue Cato, Principal at Cato Counsel and one of Australia's leading experts in corporate communications.

More than 60 people were on hand to hear Ms Cato talk about her life, career and the intricacies of corporate and political communications, during a Q&A with Jo Gray, Editor of AFR BOSS Magazine.

Through the Q&A, Ms Cato revealed that her love of media, communications and politics began early, after she joined a political party at 13 years of age, and found herself appearing on the Mike Walsh Show.

Moving into political advising in New South Wales and Canberra in the 1980s, Ms Cato developed a new approach to issues management and corporate affairs, going on to become one of the most successful and respected "spin doctors" in Australia.

"At the core of every great leader's toolkit is communication," said Associate Professor Nick Wailes, Director of MBA Programs at the University of Sydney Business School. "Sue Cato is one of the leading corporate communicators Australia has ever produced, and we were very pleased to have her share her experience and insights with us."

"For emerging leaders, there is a very important lesson in what Sue had to say," Associate Professor Wailes added. "As leaders, you will rely on other people to help you achieve extraordinary things. To make that happen, you need to help them by communicating your message and vision as effectively as possible."

The Emerging Leaders Program, produced by AFR BOSS Magazine in partnership with the Business School, which combines the opportunity to strengthen your business network with the potential for mentoring from some of Australia's best business minds, and represents a significant step forward in the recognition and fostering of new business talent.

Membership to the Emerging Leaders Program is open to all young executives from corporate Australia who meet a broad selection criteria.

The next Emerging Leaders event will be held on Thursday, 11 July and will feature Philip Corne, Chief Executive Officer of Louis Vuitton Australia. For information on how to register for that event, please visit the BOSS Emerging Leaders website
