Bradon Ellem; Russell Lansbury

Work and Organisational Studies

Project Summary

Skills and work practices in the global metalliferous mining industry are being radically transformed by continuous technological changes. This research project will investigate the impact of autonomous mining systems on the current and future workforce. It will examine why mining companies introduce new technologies, such as automation, how these changes are negotiated between management and employees and how systems of vocational education and training are responding to these changes and meeting the future workforce requirements of the industry. Four mining sites will be chosen in Australia and Sweden which provide leading examples of mining automation and the use of advanced mining systems.
