Betty's expertise is based largely on her quantitative research skills, in her role as Coordinator of the centre's awards and agreements database. She has conducted numerous projects associated with examining Australian workplace conditions and outcomes, particularly in studying the changing nature of work and the regulatory environment in contemporary Australia and its impact on workers. Her research has focused on wage determination and enterprise bargaining, benchmarking data on wages and conditions, economic and wage forecasting, and has also appeared as an expert witness before the NSW Industrial Relations Commission. Examples of past projects include the impact of the Work Choices legislation on low paid workers, the coverage of accident compensation provisions for Victorian employees as prescribed in key awards, wage movements contained in different industrial instruments regulating New South Wales employees, a case study analysis of AWAs at a workplace, a comparison of employment conditions in Individual Workplace Agreements and Awards in Western Australia, a review of prevailing community standards concerning redundancy and retrenchment across Australia, and a comparison of the content, trends and outcomes in Queensland collective certified agreements under two pieces of legislation introduced by two governments.
Betty has also worked on various other research projects undertaken by WRC. Examples include survey analysis of membership of several Professional Associations and the development of a wage forecasting tool for an Industry Fund. Her research interests include enterprise bargaining and workplace change, pay equity, work and family issues, the impact of workplace change on organisational culture (employee morale, work satisfaction and productivity) and more recently in the relationship between workplace culture, management strategy and leadership in organizations.
