Bio

Dan joined the University of Sydney Business School in 2016. He previously worked with the UNSW Business School for 8 years, where he was also one of the inaugural Fellows at the Australian Graduate School of Management (AGSM). Dan’s work reflects his interest in understanding how individuals are shaped by the context in which they work, and how, in turn, they influence their context. As such, his research, teaching, and consulting are focused on culture, identity, and leadership.

A psychologist by training, Dan draws on extensive international exposure and diverse work experience. Before completing his MBA and PhD as a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Iowa (USA), Dan worked in a range of consulting and managerial roles spanning several sectors. In Romania (his native country) he worked in media (local radio and TV stations), the not-for-profit sector (e.g., the Soros Foundation, and the Centre for Management Development), government (Ministry of Education) and consulting (running his own consulting business, and working as an organisational development consultant for Mobifon SA, now Vodafone Romania). In addition, during his MBA and PhD he worked on consulting projects with Pearson (in the US) and Roffey Park Institute (in the UK), and in recent years he conducted independent consulting projects in Australia and overseas.

Dan’s research, strongly connected to his professional and personal experiences, led to publications in top-tier journals (e.g., Journal of International Business Studies, Academy of Management Learning and Education, Journal of Business Ethics, etc.) and special recognition. He was nominated for the Academy of Management HR Division Scholarly Achievement Award in 2011, and he received the Non-Professorial Research Achievement Award in 2016 at UNSW. He also received several awards for work presented at international conferences or as a reviewer, and has been invited to serve in multiple editorial roles.

Dan is committed to facilitating the use of research findings in practice. Building on several years of teaching experience, he designed and taught courses related to cross-cultural competency and leadership development across several programs (i.e., Undergraduate, Master of Commerce, MBA, Executive MBA, and Executive Education programs), and countries (USA, Hong Kong, and Australia). Besides teaching regular courses at the University of Sydney, Dan engages in independent customised learning programs and coaching sessions, with particular interest in contributing to initiatives that have a positive social impact.

Research Interests

Dan began his research by exploring the interplay between business and cultures. More specifically, he discovered that most of the research related to culture in international business was focussed on how culture influences business, and on the experience of expatriates. In contrast, he thought it was important to also look at the reverse causality (i.e., how businesses influence cultures), and study not just expatriates, but also local employees. The work stemming from this project was published as a lead paper in a special issue focussed on the use of qualitative studies in international business, and was nominated for an international award. As such, his work has been recognised not only for the innovative questions it was addressing, but also for the unique methodology employed.

The work on local employees in multinational organisations led Dan to become interested in cultural identity – and in particular, how individuals combine different identities when exposed to different cultures (bicultural and multicultural identities). Further on, as cultural identities do not influence behaviour independently from other identities, Dan develop a broader interest in understanding how identities influence and are influenced by the work context in general.

Combined with a long interest and many years of work in leadership and leadership development, Dan’s research is now focussed on studying phenomena situated at the interplay between culture, identity, and leadership.

He explores how identities and “cultures” interact with each other, both between and within individuals, and how these identities are a vehicle for the influence of context on our thinking, attitudes, and behaviours. Equally, Dan is exploring the ways in which individuals exercise agency in these processes, in order to understand the best ways in which we can influence our environments, regardless of being or not in a formal leadership position.

Overall, Dan’s research aims to provide theoretical insights and practical guidance to individuals and organisations for navigating multiple (and increasingly conflicting) identities and perspectives, so that individuals can effectively engage with others and their contexts, shaping these interactions, as opposed to being driven by them.
