Bio

Erick (Zhaolin) Li received a Ph.D. in Business Administration from The Pennsylvania State University, a Master of Commerce in Accounting from The University of New South Wales, and a Bachelor of Engineering in Materials Science & Industrial Engineering from Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Dr. Li has been with The University of Sydney Business School since January 2009. Before moving to Sydney, he had worked in Ernst & Young LLP, Southern Arkansas University, and City University of Hong Kong.

His research interests spans two areas of interest: supply chain management (SCM) and the interfaces between operations management (OM) and other areas. He has published research articles in Decision Sciences, Management Science, and Production & Operations Management.

Dr. Li is among Asia’s top scholars in Operations Management, according to Babbar et al., (2017) that was published in the International Journal of Production Economics. The study done by Babbar et al. (2017) is the first of its kind to look at the origins of operations management research leadership in Asia. Noting that their use of the word ‘Asian’ refers to the location of the authors, not their ethnicity, the study identifies the leading authors and institutions from the region (including Australasia) and maps their networks. Its findings are based on data of all papers published in the Journal of Operations Management (JOM), International Journal of Operations and Production Management (IJOPM) and Production and Operations Management (POM) from 2001 through 2015 – a total of 420 papers. These journals were chosen because they are considered to be broad in scope and rated highest on the measure of relevancy in the field of operations management.

Dr. Li is also among the top 25 Supply Chain Management (SCM) scholars of Asia, according to a subsequent study done by Babbar et al., (2018). Their research is based on data of all papers published in the seven leading journals: Journal of Operations Management (JOM), Production and Operations Management (POM), International Journal of Operations and Production Management (IJOPM), Manufacturing and Service Operations Management (MSOM), Journal of Supply Chain Management (JSCM), Journal of Business Logistics (JBL), and Supply Chain Management: An International Journal (SCMIJ) over the 15-year period of 2001–2015.

Research Interests

Dr. Li’s primary research field is Operations Management (OM), which is the art and science of utilising available resources to maximise the operational efficiency of organisations. The ultimate goal is to create quality goods and services and to deliver them to customers at low cost. His research applies optimisation techniques and game theory to address practical challenges that an operational manager might face. For example, his research has considered procurement contract design with the presence of moral hazard and adverse selection, retail assortment planning with product substitution, and inventory management in the presence of technology obsolescence.

By collaborating with The University of Sydney Informatics Hub and Westmead Hospital, one of his recent projects developed a software that can replace the highly laborious task of selecting the most cost-effective pharmaceuticals to procure under complex rebate contracts.
