Mark's original field of expertise is Computer Science. He completed his master thesis at the University of Twente (2005) on the subject of dynamic route choice simulators. It entailed developing a route choice simulator that interacted with a micro simulation to study the behaviour of subjects when dealing with certain scenarios in an environment as realistic as possible. After his thesis Mark worked briefly at a software company developing web based applications involving digital payments before switching back to transport related topics at Omnitrans International in 2006. At Omnitrans he was responsible for many large scale traffic modelling projects such as DTA (StreamLine, lead architect), DTM (VMS modelling, ramp metering, etc.) and new semi dynamic network loading models like STAQ. On the demand side Mark worked on new discrete choice model software that integrates seamlessly with existing transport models. At ITLS Mark will be working on related topics that are again mainly focussed on network modelling research as well as developing new ways to deal with the ever growing availability of data and incorporating them in the transport models as we know them. This work will be conducted with the Chair in Transport and Logistics Network Modelling, Professor Michiel Bliemer.
