Sam comes from Newcastle where he majored in history, completing honours. His main interest is the history of the working class, its allies and opponents, in the 1940s 50s and 60s, particularly in terms of testing theories of class and the analysis of organization. He has a minor interest in the social history of computing. He currently works as an administrator at the University of New South Wales.

Working thesis title: Being Classy: Australian white collar employee organizations, 1942-1968
