Frequently Asked Questions


Who can apply?

Undergraduate students enrolled in a Business School degree (or combined Business School degree) may apply, with all majors being eligible.


Are there any prerequisites to apply?

A minimum Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 60 and the equivalent of 2 full load semesters of Business units completed by the time the program commences are also required. The host organisation and placement must meet University requirements in terms of WHS and learning outcomes.

I am an international student - am I eligible to apply?

Yes, international students are welcome to apply.

When do applications open and close?

Applications will open at 9am on 2nd August 2017 and will close at 5pm on:

29th September 2017 for placements commencing in November 2017.
23rd October 2017 for placements commencing in January 2018.

Can I receive credit for previous internships/work experience?

No. The placement component of the program is designed to run concurrently with the unit of study. Both the placement and the unit must be completed at the same time.

Can I get paid for my placement?

No. Placements must be unpaid as you will receive academic credit towards your degree.

Application Process

How do I apply?

Go to the How to Apply page and submit the online application form and supporting documents.

What documents do I need to prepare to apply?

You will need to submit:

  • An online application form
  • A copy of your academic transcript downloaded from Sydney Student
  • A completed Placement Outline from the host organisation
  • A copy of the University Placement Letter signed by the host organisation.


When will I be notified if my application is successful?

If you are applying for the November program, you will be notified by 20th October 2017.

If you are applying for the January program, you will be notified by 27th October 2017.

Once your application has been assessed an Approval form will be sent to your university email address advising the outcome of your application.

The Unit of Study

Do I get to pick my units of study?

All students accepted into the program will be enrolled in BUSS2200.

How much credit will I receive towards my degree?

Upon successful completion of the unit of study you will receive 6 credit points towards your degree. This is contingent upon completing all academic requirements and successful completion of the placement.

Are there assessments in the unit of study?

Yes, the unit of study has assessment tasks to develop your ability to apply theoretical knowledge gained in your degree to a practical business application. Assessments will include a critical self-reflection report and an oral presentation based on the placement experience.

Can the unit of study contribute towards to my major/specialisation?

No, this is an elective unit only and cannot contribute towards a major/specialisation.
It is your responsibility to ensure that you have room in your degree to undertake this unit.

It is also your responsibility to ensure that your study plans conform to the relevant degree and faculty resolutions that are applicable to you. Please make sure to read the student responsibilities statement on the current student’s website to ensure you understand those responsibilities. Please refer to the Business School Handbook for the requirements of your degree.

Can I enrol myself directly into the unit of study?

No. If accepted into the program you will be required to apply for departmental permission.

Placement and Host Organisations

How is this program different to other internships?

The program differs from other internships or work experience programs by complementing your placement experience with a unit of study. The unit of study serves to increase your critical thinking about your placement experience and is designed to enhance your other studies both during and beyond your degree.

How many hours on placement do I need to complete?

Students must complete a minimum of 210 hours on placement.

Can I do my placement at any time?

For the pilot program in summer 2017/18 there are specific program dates within which your placement must be completed:

27th November 2017 to 5th January 2018 or
15th January to 23rd February 2018.

What type of work in required for the placement?

The work must be meaningful and relevant to your studies. For the placement to be suitable, your organisation must clearly outline the tasks and duties associated with your placement. You must also be able to identify the skills and knowledge you expect to apply or develop during your time at the host organisation.

What requirements are there for host organisations?

What documents does my host organisation need to provide?

Your host organisation will need to provide a placement outline detailing the project outline and key tasks associated with your placement.

They will also need to complete and sign a University Placement Letter.
