Applications are open to new potential mentors in the Postgraduate Peer and Undergraduate Peer Mentoring program, in semester 1, 2015.

Postgraduate Peer mentor training will be held on Tuesday 25th November and the Undergraduate peer mentor training will be held on Thursday 27th November, 2014 after final exams in semester 2. You will also be required to attend a short information and training session February, the week before orientation.

By registering your interest are ensuring you will be invited to the training sessions closer to the date. This does not commit you to mentoring in 2015 if other commitments arise.

There will be two training sessions to attend and some online training activities.

Training session 1

Tuesday 25th November, 2014 (Postgraduate)

Thursday 27th November, 2014 (Undergraduate)

At our first face-to-face training session you will find out about the program activities, roles and responsibilities, and key dates. You'll learn more about the Mentor experience from some of our past mentors who will offer some words of wisdom, and share their experiences with you. We will also review some of the key skills for mentoring in the Business school.

The second part of the session will be a specially designed training to be delivered by the Counsellors at CAPS. Followed by role plays and paperwork.

Overall you will

  • Gain a clear understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a Business school mentor;
  • learn some simple but effective skills that will help you to establish a good relationship with the first year students in your group;
  • develop your interpersonal and communications skills;
  • meet other senior students in the Business school

Training session 2

Undergraduate - TBA - the week before orientation week, semester 1, 2015

This training session takes place the week before O-Week, so it's all about planning our Program launch activities. We'll look at some practical ideas and options for meetings. Discuss how students will register for the program, as well as review how to access useful information about services and activities around campus, so that you're well prepared to help your first years.

You'll also get your orientation pack and mentor t-shirt on this day.

Don't forget that there are also two online training activities for Mentors. You'll hear more about these at our first training session.

Can't make one of the training sessions?

If it turns out to be absolutely impossible for you to come to one of our training sessions (because of illness or some other serious factor beyond your control), you may still be able to participate in the program in a supporting role. Let's hope the problem doesn't arise but, if it does, you must let us know by sending an email to (undergraduate) or (postgraduate) and we'll discuss the possibilities.

Time commitment?

You'll need to be able to commit about 20 hours to this program altogether. This includes:

  1. Participating in two training sessions
    • an introduction session with the Student Support Programs team followed by a specially designed Mentor Training session delivered by CAPS and Student Services in November
    • a two hour session in February before O-Week
  2. Completing two online training activities (one in November 2014 and one in February 2015)
  3. Participating in our Orientation week events, where you will first meet the students you will be mentoring.
  4. Meeting face-to-face with the students you are mentoring three times during the course of the program
  5. Keeping in touch with your first year students over the first few weeks of semester, and being available to respond if they contact you (method of contact to be decided by the group at your first meeting).
  6. Submitting reports


What's in it for you?

What does a mentor do?

  • works individually or in teams with 10 - 15 students for each mentor
  • provides practical information through a structured academic and campus orientation program

At the training sessions you receive a manual and all the information you need to carry out your role.

A mentor is:

  • a second, third or fourth year (senior) student
  • a volunteer
  • someone who helps a small group of new students to settle in
  • committed to maintaining this support for the first 4 weeks of semester
  • able to direct students to various support services available on campus
  • enthusiastic about peer mentoring

A mentor does not:

  • need to be an expert in a particular field of study
  • act as a tutor for students in the group

How does the Mentoring Program work?

Mentor applications are accepted from those who have already participated in the University of Sydney Business School Peer Mentoring program or are a senior student of the Business School. Professional development is provided before the semester commences, ensuring mentors have the right skills and knowledge to successfully support new students' transition to the University of Sydney Business School. Mentors attend Orientation where they meet their mentees and conduct a tour of the campus with their group. Social events are hosted by the Business School for all participants to encourage building social networks. Mentors are also encouraged to arrange their own social event with their group.

Mentoring is a great way to meet new people, develop leadership and intercultural skills and adds a competitive edge to any resume.

How do I know when the training session is? How long will it go for?

How long does the program run for?

The Undergraduate Mentoring Program runs for a total of 6 weeks from the beginning of semester.

The Postgraduate Mentoring Program runs for a total of 8 weeks from the beginning of semester.

Do I get paid?

Mentoring is a voluntary role designed to assist students in settling in to the University learning community. Although you will not be getting any payment, some of the many benefits you will gain are; service skills, social skills, certificates, free social events and prizes such as movie and Co-Op vouchers.

What do I need to do on Orientation Day?

Orientation Day is the most important day of the mentoring calendar. It is the day when mentees initially sign up, meet their mentors, create a meeting schedule and take mentees them on a tour of the university. You will receive an email prior to Orientation Day detailing the time and meeting place for mentors to meet.

How do I get in touch with my mentees?

When new students sign up for the program they will give you their contact details. It is the responsibility of the mentors to keep a record of these for their own use, as well as to send to the program coordinator. Check with your mentees what their preferred method of communication is at orientation.

Can I add extra new students to my group?

On Orientation Day you will receive in your group a bulk of mentees but some students may enrol late and wish to join the program. Please advise the Mentoring Program Coordinators of new additions to your group by emailing the appropriate undergraduate or postgraduate address. This is VERY important as it ensure all our records and reporting systems are accurate.

How many meetings should I have with the group?

The Mentoring Program insists on a minimum of 3 meetings per semester. This should occur within the timeframe that the Mentoring Program outlines. Although not compulsory, you are encouraged to organise additional meetings and events for your mentees. This would help you build a rapport with your mentees and also build their confidence in regards to meeting other students.

What if no one wants to participate in activities?

You can only encourage your mentees to participate; you cannot force them to do anything they don’t want to. Usually the mentee is a new local or international student and very nervous about starting at a new university or coming to a new country. Thus, inclusion is important. Try and gently encourage them to participate. Once you have their dedication to the program, they will begin to feel part of the learning community.

When will the social events take place?

Social event dates and times are pre organised by the Mentoring Program Coordinators. Please check your University email regularly for the dates and times of social events.

Can we organise our own additional events?

Absolutely - we encourage you to organise additional outings and/or meetings with your mentees. You might like to get together with other mentors and do something with a larger group of mentees.
