Professional placement opportunities
Below is a list of professional placement opportunities in LA. Students will attend their placement four days a week, Monday through to Thursday for the duration of the program.
Though the skill set for each placement will vary, the same core requirements will hold for all: professionalism, integrity, strong oral and written communication, research skills, and the ability to work as part of a team.
This is the list of placement organisations as of 24 September 2012. Details of additional placements will be added to the list once they are confirmed.
- Capello Capital
For over 39 years, Cappello Capital Corp. and its affiliates have provided innovative investment banking services to public and private companies for a broad range of transactions exceeding $155 billion in aggregate value. Whether a client's needs are complex or conventional in nature, Cappello professionals apply their expertise to provide: access to growth capital, recapitalizations, advice on mergers and acquisitions, guidance on strategic decisions, restructuring of ailing balance sheets and valuation services. Students will work under Paul Hopper, Managing Director of Capello Group Inc., and Head of the Australia Desk and Paul Kromwyk, Senior Vice President of Capello Capital Corp.
- Fink & Steinberg Attorneys at Law
Fink & Steinberg is a boutique litigation firm with a primary emphasis on labor and employment matters. The firm was founded in 1997 when Mr. Fink left one of the nation's largest law firms in order to create a unique firm that focused solely on litigation for plaintiffs and defendants. The firm specialises in litigating employment and labor matters involving wrongful termination, discrimination, harassment and wage and hour issues. In addition to employment, the firm litigates a wide variety of cases including real estate, business, legal malpractice, family law, civil rights, product liability and complex personal injury matters. Two students will work under Keith A. Fink, Principal Partner, on various cases spanning the firm's areas of specialty.
- ROAR
ROAR, LLC offers media management and production services to corporations and high net worth individuals. It provides film and television talent, music, and brand management; film and television production; media advisory; business development; and content creation services. Additionally, the company offers media partnerships and alliances management services. ROAR caters to entertainment, lifestyle, and corporate sectors. The company was founded in 2000 and is based in Los Angeles, California with additional offices in New York, New York; Nashville, Tennessee; and Atlanta, Georgia. Two students will work under Zsofi Paterson, Director of Strategy on various projects across ROAR's extensive portfolio.
- Latitude Entertainment
Headed by Greg Coote, one of Australia's film pioneers, students will work on projects across the company's diverse portfolio including the distribution of Chinese films throughout North America. Greg Coote, who is also the Chairman of ScreenSingapore, was the Chairman and CEO of Dune Entertainment, when the company co-financed the world's highest grossing film of all time, AVATAR. As joint Managing Director of Roadshow he played a key role in developing Australia's fledgling film industry. He left Roadshow and joined Rupert Murdoch as Managing Director of the Ten Network and then went on to Columbia Pictures in Los Angeles as President, International Theatrical, where he was responsible for worldwide acquisition, marketing and distribution.
- Tourism Australia
Tourism Australia is the Australian Government agency responsible for attracting international visitors to Australia and encouraging Australians to travel domestically, both for leisure and business events. In the Americas, the focus of Tourism Australia's activities is in the USA, Canada and Brazil. Activity throughout the region is managed from Tourism Australia's office in Los Angeles. One student will support the LA office in a range of areas including advertising, PR and media programs, trade shows and industry programs etc. The main focus of the placement will be focused on the offices G'day USA Australia Week activities in January.
- Destination NSW
Destination NSW is responsible for devising and implementing strategies to grow the visitor economy, with particular focus on driving tourism and acquiring and developing major sporting and cultural events for Sydney and regional NSW. Students will support the LA office in their marketing efforts, including work on the offices G'day USA Australia Week activities.
- Tourism Queensland
Tourism Queensland's primary responsibility is to facilitate the promotion, marketing and development of tourism to and within Queensland. Students will work in the organisations LA office on PR, communications and marketing projects, including the offices G'day USA Australia Week activities.
- Cotton On
Cotton On is an Australian retail company, which was founded in 1991, and today has over 800 stores worldwide and employs around 5,500 people. Students will work in the HR department of the company's North American office headquartered in LA.
- City of Santa Monica
The Santa Monica City Council, is the governing body of the city of Santa Monica. Santa Monica is a diverse city, housing executives and Hollywood celebrities to single-family neighbourhoods. It has a very active consistency that engages in all facets of the community's development and issues. The Council is made up of seven members elected at-large for staggered four-year terms. Every two years, after each election, the City Council selects one of its members to serve as Mayor and another to serve as Mayor Pro Tempore. Specific tasks/departments that students will work in are yet to be confirmed.
- Pacific Council on International Policy
The non-partisan Pacific Council is the premier membership-based international affairs organization focused on policy issues of special resonance on and to the West Coast. The Council's membership consists of a diverse network of leaders from a broad range of professions and business sectors; our members are heavily invested in understanding international affairs and affecting public policy. The Pacific Council provides them with opportunities to enhance their knowledge of global issues and their effectiveness in the international arena both professionally and personally. Students will assist the organisation on various research-based projects.
