Professor Bradon Ellem publishes new book on the Pilbara

The Pilbara: From the Deserts Profits ComeThe Pilbara has long been a media staple, through stories of massive profits, fly-in-fly-out work and extraordinary levels of export income. For all this, most people know little about the region and still less about the men and women who work there or how the place has been transformed in 50 years of mining. From 2001, Bradon Ellem visited the Pilbara nearly twenty times, learning and writing about the place, its people and its politics. His new book, The Pilbara: From the Deserts Profits Come (UWA Publishing), traces the rise of union power and the companies’ fightback. His account shows how the Pilbara has been ‘remade’ and, with that, Australian industrial relations recast.
