Biographical details

Dr Timothy Dobbins is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Sydney's Cancer Epidemiology and Services Research (CESR) group. He completed his PhD, examining methods for analysing longitudinal data from a stratified, cluster randomised trial at the University of Sydney in 2005. After completing his doctoral training, Timothy was employed in the teaching focussed position of Lecturer in Biostatistics at the University of Sydney. Here he was committed to developing and delivering quality teaching and learning in biostatistics to post-graduate students. He was a key collaborator in developing the first Introduction to the Analysis of Linked Data course to be based on NSW data, first delivered in 2008. Timothy worked at UNSW's Lowy Cancer Research Centre in 2009 and 2010, and moved to CESR in December, 2010.

Research interests

I am a biostatistician with extensive experience in the application of statistical methods to research in health and medicine. I have a particular interest in the design and analysis of cluster randomised trials and other studies dealing with correlated data. I have extensive experience working with linked administrative data, and enjoy the challenge of conducting clinical and policy research using large and complex sets of data.

Teaching areas

I have a strong background in student focussed teaching and learning of biostatistical techniques. I was the unit coordinator of Multiple Regression and Statistical Computing between 2004 and 2008, and am a key contributor to the Introduction to the Analysis of Linked Data unit.
