Faculty of Health Sciences

Health Sciences

Overview

Graduates from the Faculty of Health Sciences enter jobs that enable them to make a practical difference to people’s lives through the breadth and depth of their understanding of health issues and propensity to innovative practice in addressing the 'big issues' facing the health, disability and rehabilitation sectors, both in Australia and abroad.

Graduates can also pursue careers in allied health professions through transformative research or work in corporate roles in health, within professions that are crucial to maintaining the health system but do not involve the direct treatment of patients. They include systems analysts, communications specialists, liaison officers, project and case managers in the areas of health education, research, policy, management and health advocacy in teams of different health professionals within various health contexts.

For more information about careers in health, visit the Health sciences faculty website.

Bachelor of Applied Science (Health Sciences)

Graduates work with children, adults, disadvantaged groups and employees. The field relies on diverse approaches to combat factors that cause poor health such as alcohol and other drug use, chronic illnesses, health and wellbeing, mental health, smoking cessation and healthy eating. Roles include health education, advocacy and mediation, policy development, case management, community health, health writing, health promotion of populations and communities and disease prevention, behavioural health analysis, project management, program planning, design and evaluation, policy development and analysis, health administration, health technology and health informatics, the latter being a growing area of employment in Australia and around the world.

Potential employers include government departments, private health care suppliers, health insurance, media, scientific firms, health clinics, not for profit research networks and medical and pharmaceutical firms.

Bachelor of Applied Science (Speech Pathology)

Speech pathologists work with children and adults with communication difficulties, including problems with speaking, comprehension, reading, writing, voice problems, stuttering or swallowing difficulties.

Speech pathologists provide individual therapy, work in small groups or within a classroom. They become involved in home-based programs, provide resources and information, give advice and direction to clients, their carers’ and other professionals; they coordinate the management of clients, and working as part of a multi disciplinary team, consult with other agencies to provide workshops and support family members and other caregivers. They may also set up as private practitioners.

Speech pathologists work in diverse settings including hospitals, nursing homes, universities, rehabilitation services, schools and early childhood services, mental health settings, community health settings, private practice and specialist services for those with complex communication needs, arising from disorders such as autism, cerebral palsy and intellectual disability liaising with professionals in education and the social services in metropolitan, regional, rural and remote settings.

Bachelor of Applied Science (Physiotherapy)

Graduates contribute significantly to the wider community by treating a wide variety of conditions and helping to promote their patients' health and wellbeing. They treat injuries and fractures including high profile sports injuries, orthopaedics and joints, strokes, post-surgical rehabilitation, intensive care or terminal illness, abdominal conditions, obstetrics and gynaecology, chest conditions, posture and movement, neurological conditions such as stroke and Parkinson's disease, movement disorders in children, learning difficulties and mental illness. They also play a central role in the management and prevention of chronic conditions such as asthma.
Career positions are available in both the public and private sectors, in settings such as health care centres and organisations, sports clubs, schools and community, and private practices. Some graduates work in health education and promotion to specific groups.

Bachelor of Applied Science (Occupational Therapy)

Occupational therapists have specialised knowledge to promote health and wellbeing through using their understanding of occupation and health. They work collaboratively with people who might have limitations, including those caused by injury, health conditions, delayed development or the effects of ageing. Occupational therapy interventions are designed to enhance participation in everyday life and may include activities or assistive devices, or modification of home or work environments to facilitate active engagement in work, home, social and leisure activities.

Graduates work in diverse areas including acute, psychiatric or rehabilitation hospitals, schools, community health centres, mental health, government, private practice or teaching and research. They also work in non-traditional areas such as early intervention, health promotion, education, consultancy, industry and accessibility. Employment opportunities are plentiful due to shortages of qualified practitioners in many areas of practice and in many regions around Australia and internationally.

Graduates also have the option of changing careers a number of times while staying within the same profession. For example, a therapist could commence a career working one-on-one with teens with spinal cord injury, then work with babies in neonatal intensive care, adults in occupational rehabilitation at a large insurance company, or young adults in a community mental health program.

Bachelor of Applied Science (MRS) Diagnostic Radiography

Diagnostic radiographers work closely with radiologists to employ a range of technologies, according to the information provided in a medical practitioner's request, to create images that can help to provide an accurate diagnosis. They work closely with cardiologists in imaging heart disease, with surgeons during a range of operations, and with emergency doctors in emergency wards.

Graduates can work in public hospitals, private hospitals and private
radiology practices that could be large or small, in metropolitan or
remote rural areas or at universities in academic roles. There are
opportunities in corporate applications where they are recruited by
radiographic equipment companies to train users in clinical practice; also
in corporate sales where X-ray equipment companies require
radiographers to sell their equipment to private radiology groups and
hospitals.
Some radiographers run their own business in partnership with other imaging professionals like radiologists.
