Make an Impact - VIP Access

Targeting: All students
Duration: One hour
Overview: This session will look at how to best prepare for the Careers Fair and for graduate and internship recruitment. Find out effective ways to make an impact on potential employers
Outcomes:

  • Students will make a good impression on employers at the Careers Fair
  • Will have a more stream-lined entrance to the Fair and enhanced employer access
  • Build your ability to network, ask relevant questions and research.

Resume writing

Targeting: Students in all years across all disciplines
Duration: 1 hour
Overview: This one hour session will outline the essential information you need to develop a great resume in a competitive job environment.
Outcomes:

  • Find out what employers say about effective resume length, headings, format and referees.
  • Learn how to outline your studies, experience and extra-curricular activities for maximum impact and focus your content to match job requirements.
  • Avoid the common mistakes and improve your current resume so that you have a better chance of gaining an invitation to a job interview.
  • When you have attended this workshop and revised your resume, attend a Resume Rescue workshop to receive feedback on your document from an experienced careers practitioner.

Resume rescue

Targeting: All students
Duration: 1 hour
Overview: Qualified Careers Centre staff will check your resume in a group setting and give you practical tips on how to improve it. You need to bring a copy of your resume and any other relevant job application documents to this workshop.


Job interview technique

Targeting: Students in all years across all disciplines
Duration: 1 hour
Overview: This session looks at the preparation required before an interview and gives an insight into what happens in different types of interviews including panel, telephone and assessment centre situations. This session is presented by experienced career practitioners who can provide tips passed on from graduate employers.
Outcomes:

  • Receive tips on how to structure a great response to behavioural interview questions using the STAR technique.
  • Practice some common interview questions
  • Find out what to do at the end of your interview and how to improve your interview performance.

How employable are you? Build your personal brand statement

Targeting: Students in all years across all disciplines
Duration: 1 hour
Overview: This one-hour workshop aims to assist students to identify your skills, strengths and attributes.
Outcomes:

  • Learn how to build your unique skill set into a ‘personal brand statement’ so that you can network effectively.
  • Develop strategies for extending your skills set.
  • Find out how to stand out from the crowd when you describe yourself and what you can offer potential employers or future investors in your business.

Looking for casual work

Targeting: Students in all years across all disciplines
Duration: 1 hour
Overview: Find out how to get casual or part-time employment while you study.
Outcomes:

  • Learn how to use the Career Centre’s jobs database to your advantage.
  • Gain some tips on how to make the most of your casual work experience in applying for degree-related work.
  • Be clear about how to understand and manage the recruitment processes.

Applying for graduate work: case interviews

Duration: 1 hour
Overview: This workshop will discuss case interviews and how to respond to this very specific type of interview, commonly used by management consulting firms
Outcomes:

  • Learn about how to ‘crack the case’ using a problem-solving methodology
  • Hear about the range of cases that could be asked
  • Be better prepared to demonstrate your skills in analytical thinking and logic when presented with unfamiliar material.

Applying for graduate work: online applications

Overview: This workshop will provide detailed advice on completing online applications.
Outcomes:

Learn about the process of formal graduate recruitment, how to make the most of Careers Fairs, understanding what employers are looking for and how to maximise your chances of success.

Find out how to research organisations effectively.

Learn tips on how completing job application forms effectively.

Determine what makes a highly-scored response to online application open-ended questions about your experience and approach.


Applying for graduate work: assessment centres

Targeting: Penultimate, Final year and Postgraduate students
Duration: 1 hour
Overview: This workshop will clarify what to expect at an assessment centre
Outcomes:

  • Hear about the range of activities you could expect at an assessment centre, including psychometric tests and group activities.
  • Observe a sample assessment centre activity and learn which behaviours and responses are considered positive and successful.
  • Hear tips on how to prepare for an assessment centre

Applying for graduate work: interview technique

Overview: This workshop will discuss graduate job interviews and how to develop great responses to questions
Outcomes:

  • Learn about first and subsequent round of interviews
  • Practice responding to common interview questions
  • Be better prepared to demonstrate appropriate interview etiquette and behaviour.

Applying for graduate programs in the public sector

Overview: This workshop will discuss the graduate recruitment process in the public sector.
Outcomes:

  • Learn about the job opportunities in the public sector.
  • See how to respond to selection criteria in the depth that is required for public sector applications.

Job search for international students

Targeting: International Students or recent permanent residents
Duration: 1 hour
Overview: This workshop will cover suggestions and strategies for international students to assist you in finding casual or part-time employment in Australia as well as looking longer term at the graduate market internationally
Outcomes:

  • Learn how to use the Career Centre’s jobs database to your advantage.
  • Gain confidence in managing the range of recruitment processes you may face, particularly job interviews
  • Learn how to make your application stand out from the crowd, especially when you have limited local experience
  • Gain tips on how to extend your networks both locally and internationally

Get noticed program for international students

Targeting: International Students or recent permanent residents
Duration: 1 hour
Overview: This intensive program will focus on providing international students with the skills and confidence to approach the graduate job market, both locally and on your return to your home country
Outcomes:

  • Learn about the Australian workplace culture.
  • Identify your skills set.
  • Develop strategies for how to market yourself to potential employers in your resume, at interview and in networking situations.
