About the Centre for Classical and Near Eastern Studies of Australia
The Centre for Classical and Near Eastern Studies of Australia (CCANESA) is an exciting collaborative venture housed in the Madsen Building of the University of Sydney. The Centre co-locates the Australian Archaeological Institute at Athens (AAIA), research interests and projects from both the Department of Archaeology and the Department of Classics and Ancient History, the Near Eastern Archaeology Foundation (NEAF), as well as the publisher Mediterranean Archaeology. The Centre also houses the significant library and archival holdings of all the above bodies.
Currently the Centre houses The William Ritchie Theatre Research Office (CAH) and the Zagora Excavation Project (AAIA, the Department of Archaeology at the University of Sydney, The Athens Archaeological Society, the Powerhouse Museum and the Institute for Mediterranean Research in Crete). The NEAF office administers the Pella in Jordan Excavation Project.
CCANESA's facilities include offices for visiting scholars, a library with reading room, a board room, a meeting room and reception area with kitchen.
Visitors are invited to use the Centre's facilities by appointment.
Directions to CCANESA
The Madsen Building is the closest University building to the City Road gate of the University’s main (Camperdown) campus (click here for campus map). The building is located on the left hand side of the Eastern Avenue pedestrian mall when entering campus from City Road. Madsen is a heritage property built in the neo-gothic style and has a prominent tower.
The closest car-park to the building is to the left hand side as you face it, just as you enter the gate from City Road. Campus parking is on a metered basis.
Enter Madsen via the main door on Eastern Avenue (which opens onto the L3 foyer). CCANESA is one storey up from street level, on level four. Walk through the foyer and take the stairs on the right up one flight. You will arrive at the front door of CCANESA.
If you need to use an elevator, please walk straight down the central corridor in front of you as you enter the Madsen Building (past the stairs which will be on your right). At the end of this corridor, turn right. Go to the end again. Turn right. Just as you make this last turn you will find the lift. Take it to Level 4 and follow the corridors around to the front door of CCANESA.
Please use the telephone on the left side of the front door to call for entry. The Centre has swipe card access.
