Test preparation classes

How can I prepare for the test?

CET’s evening test preparation classes offer strategies and skills to boost your test results. Each night teaches a different skill so you can choose to attend classes in the specific area where you need help.

Test preparation evening schedule


Classes are held in CET’s learning centre, level 5 Wentworth Building from 6.00pm to 7.45pm. Materials will be provided.

A single class costs $60 OR you can pay for 10 classes for $500. Payment can be made by credit or debit card (Visa, MasterCard) money order (Post Office) bank cheque, direct deposit or bank draft.

These skills sessions will teach time management skills, broaden your vocabulary and grammar and improve your confidence.


Class descriptions

Listening

In this module you will develop skills and strategies for:

  • listening to specific information
  • listening for details
  • identifying the main idea
  • following signpost words
  • listening to short talks

You will also become familiar with test question types such as:

  • note taking
  • flowchart completion
  • multiple choice
  • labelling a diagram

Reading

In this module you will develop skills and strategies for:

  • skimming and scanning for details
  • identifying main and supporting ideas
  • identifying a writer’s opinion
  • summarising

You will also become familiar with test question types such as:

  • matching headings
  • short answer questions
  • completing a diagram
  • summaries
  • True/False/ Not given questions

Writing

The writing module develops skills for both general and academic tests. You will develop skills and strategies for:

Academic

  • interpreting graphs, diagrams and tables
  • describing a process
  • planning an essay
  • organising ideas effectively


General training

  • planning a letter
  • the appropriate use of language
  • planning an essay
  • the appropriate use of ideas

Speaking

In this module you will develop skills and strategies for:

  • responding to personal questions
  • preparing a talk
  • understanding abstract questions
  • expressing your ideas clearly and effectively
