The University of Sydney International Student Experience Showcase was a successful evening of networking and building connections with like-minded professionals from the University and the industry, all dedicated to support and enhance the welfare of international students. The Showcase took place in the Refectory at the University of Sydney on the 8th of November 2018. The concept of the event was to provide a platform for internal and external stakeholders of the University to discuss ways in which they could support and assist international students during their time in Sydney. The focus was given to seven key initiatives which are part of the International Student Experience Steering Group, led by Professor Greg Whitwell, Dean of the University of Sydney Business School.

The seven key initiatives were:

  • China Pre-Arrival Sessions, by the Student Transition & Retention team
  • Welcome to Sydney Program, by the Division of Alumni and Development
  • myUni App and the Sydney Uni App, by the Information and Communications Technology team
  • Graduate Edge International, by the Careers Centre
  • Speak and Connect, by the Centre for English Teaching and Student Support Services
  • CET Connect, by the Education Services team at the Centre for English Teaching
  • Water Safe Program, by the Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness
  • Each initiative owner was able to liaise with guests via their own information booth on the night and present their initiatives to a cohort of 152 avid and interested attendees. During the evening, senior executives and key staff from across the University attended the event, as well as guests from the NSW Department of Industry, City of Sydney, NSW Police Force, Fair Work Ombudsman, NEAS and Austrade amongst others.

The evening was completed with insights and reflections from key speakers Professor Pip Pattison, DVC (Education) and Professor Greg Whitwell, Dean of the University of Sydney Business School, who reported on the importance of providing a positive and safe experience to students and the necessity of creating a sense of connectedness for international students. The inspiring speeches were followed by an heartfelt panel discussion from Elizabeth Mora, Claudia Carrasco Cabrera and Risako Katsumata, three peer-facilitators involved in one of the initiatives showcased on the night, Speak and Connect. The three university students shared their experiences of the Speak and Connect program, the impact of being involved in such an initiative and how they believed that the program helped the wellbeing of international students and created a sense of belonging to the University of Sydney.

The International Student Experience Showcase provided a platform to continue discussions around the international student experience at the University of Sydney and the importance of creating opportunities for students to interact with others and learn from their connections. The Showcase is hopefully laying the first stone for future collaborations across the University but also with providers of services to international students.
