Where to stay?

During your time in Australia you will learn about the Australian environment and culture, as well as the English language. To make the most of your opportunity, we want you to be comfortable and 'at home' in your environment including your accommodation.

That's why we recommend homestay accommodation for up to the first three months of your stay in Sydney.

There is also the option of staying close to campus in a small group living environment, designed especially for international students. These facilities offer you Independence while still providing a high level of support and immediate network of friends.

Many ELICOS students choose to stay with an Australian family while learning English. It is a good way to practise English and learn about the Australian way of life.

Australian households vary, and may be a married couple with or without children, a one-parent family or a single person who wishes to share with an international student. A household may also include other students.

With homestay, you live with a family, have your own bedroom and share the family bathroom. You are treated as a member of the family. You should keep your room tidy and be helpful about the house.

Breakfast and dinner (at night) are provided from Monday to Friday, and on Saturday and Sunday you will have breakfast, lunch and dinner. The family does not provide your lunch from Monday to Friday.

CET demands that all homestay providers meet minimum standards of service. Click here to see a copy of CET's homestay provider service standards

Our Homestay Provider

Australian Homestay Network (AHN)

Why is Homestay a great option?

Homestay is a cultural exchange between a local individual or family (the host) and a visiting student, the student lives as a guest in the host family’s home.

AHN Homestay Hosts are trained to assist international students:

  • Settle into their new community
  • Understanding the basics of Australian culture.
  • Everyday conversational skills.
  • Learning the basics such as buying transport tickets, where the local shops are, how to access.
  • Banking, internet, mobile phone and personal safety tips.
  • Frequently used English and ‘Aussie’ words and phrases.

Unlike other accommodation options students don’t need to sign any long-term contracts, pay a bond, find furniture or search for a property themselves. Students are matched by a fully trained AHN Supervisor with a suitable AHN Homestay Host according to the needs of the student and education provider location.

An AHN Homestay student is provided with:

  • A clean furnished room (this includes items like a bed, desk, wardrobe, chair and a study lamp).
  • A supportive family environment and home to live in.
  • Meals (as specified) and accommodation (including utilities).
  • Ongoing Homestay host and student support.
  • AHN 24/7 professional phone support.
  • Bathroom and laundry facilities.

AHN offers a range of service levels to cater for all type of guests, including ‘Home Share’ which is ideal for more independent students.

International student small group living

Another accommodation option for those seeking more independence than Homestay, but still requiring a high level of support when they arrive to study in Sydney, is small group living designed for international students. These facilities offer the advantages of being close to campus and arriving into a small community of like-minded people. The staff in these facilities offer support to ensure you settle into living in Sydney quickly and get the most out of your study experience at CET.

International House (IH) provides on campus accommodation to students and their families. They provide short-term accommodation from December to February each year to all CET students. They also offer long-term accommodation to DEC students who plan to go onto study at the University of Sydney. For more details please and remember to tell them you are a CET student.
