Tips to help you
Working with small groups is an important part of your Sydney University experience. As an international student, navigating the demands of group work can be particularly challenging. Current research at the Centre for English Teaching (CET) conducted by PhD candidate and teacher Lydia Dutcher looks at communication between speakers from different backgrounds as they work on classroom tasks. Her advice is:
- remember that everyone sometimes has questions or doubts, regardless of their background;
- be confident in your understanding of the topic and think about what you, uniquely, can contribute to the group;
- think in advance about topics that may come up and make some notes about what you might say.
If you make the most of it, group work can be a great opportunity to build lasting relationships at Sydney University and to have fun with your learning experience.
