Widening Participation and Outreach sits within the Global Student Recruitment & Mobility portfolio under the direction of Michelle Carlin, Executive Director, Global Student Recruitment and Deputy Vice-Chancellor Registrar, Professor Tyrone Carlin.


Mary Teague

Head Widening Participation and Outreach


Mary has worked at the University of Sydney since 2007 initially in Student Equity (Disability) and then Widening Participation and Outreach. She is the University contact for the Higher Education and Participation and Partnerships Program (HEPPP) and is the University representative on the G08 Equity Working Group. She leads University-wide programs and Faculty based initiatives to increase the access and participation of students from under-represented groups. This has included the strategic implementation of access pathways, the pre-tertiary component of the Wingara Mura-Bunga Barrabugu Strategy, cross-University collaborations, and a grants program for inter-disciplinary widening participation outreach activities and research in faculties.

She has recently overseen the development of the WPO Strategy released in 2016 and WPO 2017 Schools program, which focusses on building student academic capacity through early exposure to University.

She has recently established partnerships with both NGO’s and leading arts organisations, Sydney Story Factory and Sydney Writers Festival to deliver a sustainable and innovative outreach program.

She undertook a Masters of Teaching at Sydney and then taught in NSW secondary schools, and also lectured at UNSW, Built Environment, prior to working at the University at Sydney.

Josie Wilson

Josie leads and supports programs and initiatives to build school and community capacity to attend higher education and to increase the participation of students from identified cohorts. Josie is responsible for securing new partnerships with schools and their communities, industry and non-government agencies.


Amy Bywater

Amy Bywater

Amy coordinates the content development and implementation of our Primary and High School programs. A part of this role she liaises with school staff at Compass partner schools and is also responsible for the management of internal and external partnerships related to program content development.


Bianca Williams

Bianca Williams

Bianca is responsible for a range of academic enrichment activities in schools and in community supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and their families to navigate the ropes of higher education.

Dorothy Tran

Dorothy coordinates and manages a range of on-campus events and activities. Her role includes university staff, students and key internal and external stakeholders event content development, logistics and operations support and liaison; training and management of Compass student leaders; and event promotion and implementation.

Tristan Worledge

Project Officer - Schools Outreach


Tristan is responsible the coordination and delivery of the school based outreach programs. He has long been involved with the University of Sydney where he completed both his pre-school and undergraduate education. Tristan has a professional background in teaching and administration, having taught Maths and Science in both the UK and Australia before returning to the University of Sydney to support students through the University’s direct application process.


Katy Head

Coordinator Strategic Projects


Katy manages a range of key fixed term strategic projects, the implementation and development of evaluation, monitoring and sustainability frameworks, grant applications, funding submissions and internal and external reporting requirements across Widening Participation and Outreach. Her role involves extensive stakeholder management and communication to effectively inform and implement key strategic initiatives.


Nicholas Hollins

Nicholas Hollins

Nicholas is the editor of ASTAR. Responsible for publishing articles, managing a growing team of contributors, social media, publicity, documenting Compass programs and encouraging students to tell their own stories.


Kristy ONeill

Administration Assistant - School Outreach


Kristy is responsible for coordinating the delivery of our primary school-focused programs. She provides general administrative support to the Schools Outreach team and is a key contact for stakeholders at Compass partner schools. Kristy has a background in education, training as a PDHPE teacher and teaching undergraduate students at the University of Sydney. She is in the final stages of completing her PhD.
