Numeracy Tutoring (High School)
Many students struggle with basic numeracy when they begin high school. These difficulties create further challenges as they progress through school, in mathematics and other subjects where numeracy skills are crucial.
In 2013 we are launching a new volunteer program to assist students in Years 7 or 8 who need extra support in numeracy. As a volunteer, you will work one-on-one with students to deliver a set program that will help them to develop their basic mathematics skills.
Who should volunteer?
We are seeking volunteers who are:
- Interested in mathematics or in assisting students with basic numeracy
- Keen to help students aged 12 to 15
- Comfortable delivering a structured tutoring program in a one-on-one setting
- Available to volunteer each week for the duration of the program
Read the position description (PDF).
The program runs for 13 weeks, in two blocks:
|Start date||End date|
|Monday 6 May (Semester 1, Week 9)||Friday 7 June (Semester 1, Week 13)|
|Monday 29 July (Semester 2, Week 1)||Friday 20 September (Semester 2, Week 8)|
Volunteers must be available for all 13 weeks in order to participate.
Volunteers will need to be available for one 3-hour period per week during the hours of 8.30am-3.30pm, Monday-Friday. This period includes 1 hour of volunteering in school, and approximately 2 hours of travel time to/from the school. You will volunteer at the same time each week.
Volunteers are placed at one high school for the duration of the program. Volunteer opportunities are available across Sydney, including:
- Fairfield High School
- Kogarah High School
- Westfields Sports High School
Compass will reimburse transport costs/mileage to a maximum of $20 per week.
