Chinese In-Country Language Program
Overview
The University of Sydney Confucius Institute, in cooperation with the Chinese Studies Department, School of Languages and Cultures, Faculty of Arts, offers intensive Chinese language programs at Fudan University - our partner university in Shanghai.
The program will be taught by expert Chinese language teaching staff at Fudan University, Shanghai. Teachers from the University of Sydney will be in attendance to support students.
Four-Week Intensive Chinese Language Program - Shanghai
26 November 2012 to 21 December 2012 (Fudan University, Shanghai)
The Chinese Language In-Country programs are taught in intensive mode over a four-week period. The program includes language instruction in the mornings and there will be the opportunity for some cultural activities on some afternoons. Maximum class size is 15 students.
It will be mid-winter upon arrival in Shanghai. Please ensure you have sufficient warm clothing and check the weather forecast online.
Credit Points
Students are able to apply for credit points for the In-Country Program.
Students must be enrolled in Chinese In-Country Study units with the School of Language and Cultures, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, prior to their departure to China in order to receive credit point allocation of 6 credit points in the China Studies Program.
Students can obtain the special permission for enrolment in Chinese In-Country units, such as CHNS2650, from the International Co-ordinator Chinese Studies Xiaowei Zhang, , or any academic members in the Department of Chinese Studies (staff contact details: sydney.edu.au/arts/chinese/staff ).
Other requirements for credit point allocation:
- Pre-requisite: 12cp in Chinese language studies
- Students must successfully complete the four-week program
- Upon their return from China students must provide transcripts from Fudan University to the School of Languages and Cultures
Students must ensure their academic transcripts include all of the following information:
- student’s name
- tuition period
- level of class
- subject/s taken
- marks
- class hours
Chinese Language Requirements
The programs are intended for students with different levels of Chinese language proficiency.
Students will be allocated to specific groups depending on their Chinese proficiency which will be tested upon arrival by members of the Chinese teaching staff.
Arrangements and Costs
The program fee for 2012 has not yet been finalised.
The program fee will include:
- Tuition for 20 teaching days
- Teaching materials including books and other items
- Registration fees
Not included are items such as accomodation, food, laundry and all other items not specifically listed above.
Self-arranged payments not included in the program fee:
- International air-travel and domestic travel
- Accommodation (single rooms approximately 200RMB/day, twin share rooms approximately 100RMB/day per person)
- Visa application fee
- Additional self-incurred expenses in China (meals and incidentals). Allow for a budget of A$80 – A$150 per week)
Visas
You must organise your own visa for the program and make sure you have a valid visa and passport for the duration of your stay in China.
You will need to organise an appointment with the China Visa Application Centre. You can visit their website and begin your online visa application here.
Program Requirements
- You MUST have a valid passport. If you do not have a passport or if it expires before August 2011, you MUST apply for one now.
- Organise your insurance cover. Registrations will only be processed in accompanied by a valid insurance policy.
- Collect your visa forms and undergo health check if required. Submit copies of your visa, insurance certificates and passport to the Program Administrator.
- Arrange your flights to and from China.
