The combined Bachelor of Arts (Advanced) (Honours) and Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery offers admission to five select applicants each year. As a student of exceptional talent, the course allows you to realise your academic interests in both the humanities and social sciences and the study of medicine.

You will meet medical prerequisite requirements during your first three years of study. Satisfactory completion of all requirements for the Bachelor of Arts (Advanced) (Honours) will provide exemption from the GAMSAT and immediate admission to the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in your fourth year.

The course offers clinical experience at leading hospitals, research opportunities at world-leading institutes, and established elective placements throughout Europe, Africa, North America and Asia. You will emerge as a graduate with outstanding personal and professional communication skills and an awareness of current best practice in medical education, who is responsive and committed to the health needs of individuals, families and communities.

Applications for the University's undergraduate courses are made through the Universities Admission Centre (UAC). On-time applications for the March semester close on the last working day of September.

Short-listed applicants will be interviewed.

Admission requirements

Admission to this course for five outstanding applicants each year is on the basis of a secondary school leaving qualification such as the NSW Higher School Certificate (including national and international equivalents), tertiary study or an approved preparation program, and an interview conducted by the Sydney Medical School. English language requirements must be met where these are not demonstrated by sufficient qualifications taught in English. Applicants are ranked by merit and offers for available places are issued according to the ranking.

High school students are eligible to apply for the Combined Medicine Degree Programs at the first opportunity after graduating high school, regardless of when their results are available. Assumed knowledge

It is recommended that students choose units of study from a subject area with which they have some familiarity, however most subject areas assume no previous knowledge.

International students

How to apply

You must apply through UAC by 28 September 2012 if you are an international fee-paying applicant who is:

* attempting an Australian Year 12 qualification in 2012
* undertaking the New Zealand National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) Level 3 in 2012

You may apply either directly to the International Office by 28 September 2012.

Further admission requirements

This course is available only to 2011 Year 12 applicants, and international applicants who have achieved an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) of at least 99.95, and who have completed one of the following:


An Australian Year 12 qualification in 2011;
An International Baccalaureate (IB) in Australia in 2011;
A New Zealand National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) Level 3 in 2011;
The University of Sydney Foundation Program in 2011.

This student contribution amount for a Commonwealth Supported Place is an indication only of the fees that are payable by you in the calendar year you commence your course, commencing in 2012 for a standard annual full time load of 48 credit points (1.0 EFTSL). The exact student contribution that you pay will depend on the specific units of study in which you ultimately enrol. If you are a Commonwealth supported student and was enrolled in a University course before 1 January 2011 your student contribution may differ.

Annual review

In addition to the fees indicated here for the course of study, International Students studying on an Australian Student Visa must have appropriate health insurance for the duration of their studies on a Student Visa through an approved provider of the Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) scheme.
