European Studies
UNDERGRADUATE MAJOR
A major in European Studies is designed to equip students with interdisciplinary and cross-cultural knowledge related to historical and contemporary Europe. Students are able to specialise in streams such as Medieval, Renaissance, Early Modern, Modern and Contemporary Europe. They can also choose from a broad range of units of study dealing with European society, politics, culture and history combining different streams.
Study plan
In order to complete the requirements for the major in European Studies, students need to have done the following:
completed at least 36 senior credit points in relevant non-languages acquisition units; completed at least three of the designated core units;
completed EITHER 12 credit points of a European or Middle Eastern Language other than English at junior advanced level OR 24 credit points of a European or Middle Eastern Language other than English at Beginners, Introductory and Senior Intermediate level. Languages that can be studied include Arabic, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Ancient Greek, Modern Greek, Latin, Spanish and Yiddish.
Graduate opportunities

Our graduates are proficient in research and inquiry, and demonstrate personal and intellectual autonomy, and ethical, social and professional understanding, qualities sought after by leading employers all over the world.
Further study for major
Eligible candidates may proceed to an Honours year in the Bachelor of Arts, or apply for admission to a rich postgraduate program in the humanities and social sciences, comprising advanced learning and professional courses. Master degrees include capstone projects ranging from internships with government and non-government organisations in Australia and overseas, the gallery and museum sector, and leading media organisations, to opportunities for independent research projects which prepare students for higher degrees by research.
