Industrial Relations and Human Resource Management
A major in Industrial Relations and Human Resource Management (IR&HRM) has two strands: the theory and practice of relations between employers, employees, unions and government; as well as the management of people within an organisation, including recruitment, selection, remuneration, appraisal, and training and development. This is a professional major which includes a work experience program with placements in unions, employer organisations, companies and government.
For a major in Industrial Relations and Human Resource Management (IR&HRM) students must complete:
(i) one junior unit of study: WORK1003 Foundations of Work and Employment); and
(ii) two compulsory senior units of study: WORK2203 Industrial Relations Policy and WORK2205 Human Resource Processes; and
(iii) a minimum of four senior IR&HRM elective units of study (24 credit points) selected from the available elective options listed in the University of Sydney Business School handbook.
All undergraduate degrees incorporating a major in Industrial Relations and Human Resource Management (IR&HRM) are Australian Human Resources Institute (AHRI) accredited. Students wishing to satisfy the requirements for professional membership of AHRI, should complete an IR&HRM major as part of their degree.
The required units of study for the major are: the following junior unit of study: WORK1003 Foundations of Work and Employment; two compulsory senior units of study: WORK2203 Industrial Relations Policy and WORK2205 Human Resource Processes and a minimum of four senior elective units of study selected from an extensive list available on the Business School website.
The Industrial Relations and Human Resource Management (IR&HRM) major provides a comprehensive and well-rounded understanding of the employment relationship and will provide you with the knowldege to pursue a career in a variety of IR&HRM fields.You can choose to specialise within your major in areas such as human resource management, strategic management, organisational behaviour, labour law, industrial relations policy and global employment relations. The IR&HRM majors are professionally accredited by the Australian Human Resources Institute.
Further study for major
Eligible students may apply for admission to an honours year in Work and Organisational Studies; or apply for admission to postgraduate study in the faculty.
