Asian Studies

HONOURS SUBJECT AREA

Asian Studies will offer students an interdisciplinary approach in understanding Asia; a comparative perspective in the study of different Asian societies and histories; and an introduction to cultural and social theories as tools to approach Asia.
You will study ancient histories of Asian societies, the diversity of Asian languages and cultures, the importance of their colonial and postcolonial histories, and the complexities of their modern rural and urban societies. Australia today is tied into Asia more than ever before, through intensifying cultural contacts, immigration, tourism, commerce and trade, and strategic alliances. Thus, the study of Asia has become vital to Australia's future, and all educated Australians need to learn more about their neighbours in the region.

The honours year

The Bachelor of Arts (Honours) year provides students who have qualified for, or been awarded, an undergraduate pass degree in the arts or humanities the opportunity to extend their potential in research. Students may continue to work in the area of their undergraduate study or undertake research in a different area.
The Bachelor of Arts (Honours) focuses on establishing your individual research practise, further equipping you for employment or entry into the Master of Arts or Doctor of Philosophy programs.

Workload and assessment

Honours in Asian Studies consists of a thesis of 18,000-20,000 words and 6000-8000 words of written work, or its equivalent, for each seminar. Each of the two seminars meets weekly for 2 hours, for one semester. The thesis is worth 60% of the final mark, and each seminar is worth 20%. While you will receive marks for all pieces of assessment, your academic transcripts will record only your final, overall Honours mark.

As with the undergraduate Asian Studies major, all units and the thesis will be in English. However, we encourage students with Asian language proficiency to utilise sources in that language for their thesis research and to seek permission to substitute Asian-language honours-level coursework in their coursework component.
